Capcom has publicly recognized Shoji Kawamori for his contributions to the development of PRAGMATA, the studio’s newly released sci-fi action game. Kawamori is best known as the creator of the Macross anime franchise, the sci-fi mech series that served as the basis for Robotech in the West. He also created the Diaclone line of transforming robot toys for Takara Toys, which Hasbro later rebranded as Transformers.
Following PRAGMATA’s release, Kawamori took to X to share that he had been involved in the game’s development, describing multiple visits to Capcom’s offices to assist with world-building and help shape the game’s anime sci-fi tone.
“I participated mainly as a supervisor for the world-building and setting, aiming to invoke a Japanese animation-style science fiction vibe.”

Kawamori also noted that the timing of the game’s lunar setting felt meaningful to him personally. “Coincidentally, the Artemis program just succeeded in a crewed lunar orbit for the first time in 53 years, and for someone like me, from the generation that watched Apollo 11’s moon landing in real time, having the moon as the setting was incredibly appealing,” he said.
Capcom’s Development Division 1 responded to Kawamori’s post on X with a message of their own, thanking him directly for his work on the project.
“We truly appreciate your supervision of the sci-fi world building, and we feel the realism and credibility of the space scenes in particular were made possible only thanks to your deep expertise.”
河森監督、この度は誠にありがとうございました✨
SF世界観を監修いただき、特に宇宙空間のリアリティや説得力は、監督の深い知見があってこそ実現できたと感じています。

The team also expressed gratitude for his in-person visits. “It was incredibly valuable to have you visit our development site in Osaka despite your busy schedule, to exchange ideas with you in person,” they added. PRAGMATA has had a strong debut since launch, with Capcom announcing earlier this week that the game sold 1 million copies within its first two days. The game has also been receiving widespread critical acclaim across the board, and if you want to know how it holds up, our full review has everything you need.
