Nintendo has released the version 3.0 update for Animal Crossing: New Horizons, delivering one of the most meaningful post-launch overhauls the game has received. The update arrives just before the launch of Animal Crossing: New Horizons – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition on January 15, reinforcing Nintendo’s effort to keep the experience fresh for both returning players and newcomers. Rather than simply adding cosmetic features, Nintendo has focused on reducing friction, improving accessibility, and deepening long-term engagement with the island life loop.
A smoother and more practical island experience
The update directly tackles some of the game’s most repetitive mechanics. Crafting now allows players to produce up to ten items at once, as long as they have the required materials. More importantly, players can now pull materials directly from home storage when crafting, removing the need to manually retrieve items from storage. These changes significantly reduce downtime and keep players focused on creativity instead of inventory management.
Nintendo has also expanded the DIY Recipes app with a new tracking page. Players can now monitor hotel-related requests and Tom Nook’s item needs in one centralized location. This makes long-term planning far easier, especially for players managing multiple projects simultaneously.
Nook Shopping has become more flexible as well. Players can permanently order items linked to Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp without needing repeated connections. Super Mario Bros. items are now available for purchase without linking a Nintendo Account, making access simpler for casual players.
Movement has received a subtle but meaningful refinement. By holding the L Button while walking, players can move while keeping their character facing forward. This improves precision when landscaping, decorating, or navigating tight spaces. Meanwhile, Isabelle now suggests melodies when players edit their island tune, and players can restore their original island flag at any time.
Easier island maintenance and new rewards
Weed management has become far less tedious. Leif will now remove weeds once they exceed 30 across the island, and Nintendo has lowered his service fee. This encourages players to experiment with their islands without fearing overwhelming cleanup later.
Diving activities also feel more rewarding. Players now receive a Pearl every time they give a scallop to Pascal, creating a predictable incentive for underwater exploration. Several seasonal items, including Snowflakes, can now be sold through Nook’s Cranny drop-off box, making selling far more convenient.
Nintendo has added new tips to the Island Life 101 app and introduced additional Nook Miles tasks tied to the new features. These additions give veteran players fresh objectives while helping newer players better understand the game’s systems. Catalog ordering for photo studios and hotel decorating has also been reorganized for smoother browsing.
Nintendo Switch 2 and companion app improvements
On Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo fixed a bug that prevented the Nook Shopping startup sound from playing correctly on the in-game smartphone. While small, this fix shows that Nintendo is actively optimizing the game for its new hardware rather than treating it as a simple port.
The NookLink feature in the Nintendo Switch Online mobile app has received updates as well. Nintendo has added new Island Newspaper articles, and the Catalog now fully supports all items introduced in version 3.0. This keeps the mobile experience aligned with the console version.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons remains available on the original Nintendo Switch, while the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition launches on January 15. Version 3.0 does not reinvent the franchise, but it sharpens nearly every core system.
