With the latest State of Play comes an extended gameplay reveal of Sucker Punch Productions’ Ghost of Tsushima. You can watch the video in full below: it’s a sight to behold in motion, all 18:40 of it.
EXPLORATION: MAY THE WIND GUIDE YOU
Lead off by Jason Connell, he talks about how exploration has been the bedrock of the game.
How can the island guide you in the most thematic, and immersive, way possible?
The wind itself will be guiding you, that you can conjure at any time to lead you to your destination. You will be able to traverse the land with your trusty horse, collecting any materials you may find along the way.
While not touched on in this segment, there will be “awareness bars” that pop up, as you’d be able to stealth around as the Ghost. More on that later.
Besides heading towards tracked locations, you will also be able to notice a variety of visual cues, including smokestacks which indicate a need for help. Birds may also guide you to other secreted away locations, like abandoned buildings in which you can find rare materials. If you find foxes, they will guide you towards hidden Inari shrines that you can honour. Three visits will give you a minor charm slot.
COMBAT: JIN, THE SAMURAI. JIN, THE GHOST
Nate Fox takes over the combat section. First off, Jin, the Samurai.
Jin will be able to challenge enemies to lethal standoffs. He’ll be able to strike down his foes in swift cuts. As you might have noticed, there are also bonus objectives you can fulfill. When aiming with the bow, it looks like there’s something attached to R3, though it wasn’t shown off. There are also different arrows, like what seems to be a fire arrow, as well as possibly up to four ranged weapons.
Enemy arrows can be “deflected”, more like you cut them down from the air when you are in a “defensive” stance. Parry enemies to open them up for you to cut them down. The ability to cut down arrows is not tied to any of the other specific stances you can do. Change them up to take down various foes. It would seem that Jin, the Samurai, will be able to bow towards his defeated enemies, as a show of honour.
Now for Jin, the Ghost. This would be the option for more stealth-oriented players, with a variety of distractions you can utilize to slaughter your enemies in the dark. The Standoff option is still available.
With multiple enemies in close proximity, Chain Assassinations are also possible to execute with the appropriate button prompt. They won’t know what hit them.
Even if you have been spotted, use a smoke bomb as a distraction, and you will still be able to land a critical strike on the enemy once they have their back turned on you. Stances are also available in this combat style. Kunai will be at your call to quickly eliminate enemies, as well, should you still be seen. With this lethal display, the Mongols will know to fear you.
For movement, a grappling hook will be at your disposal.
CUSTOMIZING JIN: THE SAMURAI/RONIN CATWALK
The various armours in this game aren’t simply cosmetic; they will give you different mechanical advantages according to your chosen playstyle.
Omamori charms will be available for you to obtain, providing passive boosts. Technique Points are also usable to learn and upgrade Jin’s skills.
For the truly fashion conscious, keep an eye out for flowers you can pick on your journey. These will be used to change the colours of your armour. To further facilitate your desire to show off your looks, the game also has a Photo Mode.
Some of the options available for screenshot happy players include:
- Colour grading
- Depth of field
- Emotions on Jin’s face
- Wind speed/direction
- Particles
- Game original score as backing track for videos
OTHER FEATURES: THE TRUE SAMURAI MOVIE EXPERIENCE
The game will have, as you might expect, Japanese voice track with subtitles. If you want to take that authenticity one step further, there’s even a mode to play the game completely in black and white. Both of these options will be available to you from the very beginning.
How’s that for the Ghost of Tsushima extended gameplay reveal? The game will be launching 17 July 2020. Which path will you go?
