Indonesia’s population records show that 657 people in the country carry names inspired by anime characters, that’s from data released by the Directorate General of Population and Civil Registration in August. The names include ones inspired by well-known series such as Naruto, Doraemon, and One Piece, showing that these fictional characters have made their way into official government documents.

According to our sister website GamerWk, 347 people are registered with the name Uzumaki or Naruto, while 181 people use the name Nobita. Another 79 people are listed with the name D. Luffy, taken from One Piece. Doraemon also appears on the list, with 16 people officially carrying that name.

Teguh Setyabudi, the Director General overseeing the data, shared these findings and seemed to enjoy the details. He pointed out that Suneo, a character often seen complaining in the Doraemon series, is also used as a name, with eight people registered under it. Teguh added that his own son used to watch Naruto almost every night during dinner.

Teguh explained that naming trends in Indonesia have shifted over the years. He said younger parents today are less focused on traditional names or names tied to family lineage, and instead often choose names based on characters or figures they grew up watching or listening to, particularly ones associated with qualities like adventure, courage, and loyalty.

The data reflects how much influence anime and global pop culture now have in Indonesia. Characters once known only from manga pages or television screens have gone on to appear in civil registration records, becoming part of a person’s identity for life.
