FINAL FANTASY X and X-2 have been re-released so many times over the years that it’s easy to lose count. So when a new version shows up on the Nintendo Switch 2, the first question most people ask is simple: is this actually worth it? The short answer is that this isn’t a remake or a version packed with new content. Instead, it’s the same HD Remaster many players already know, now running better on Switch 2 hardware and coming with a handful of new optional tools called Boosters. Whether that’s enough depends a lot on who’s picking it up, and that’s what this review breaks down, from what’s actually new, how it performs in handheld mode, and how it stacks up against every other version out there.

      What’s New: The Boosters

The main addition here is a set of Boosters players can turn on or off as they like. These include Turbo, which speeds up the game at 2x or 4x, Enemy Encounter Override to control random battles, Supercharge to make fights easier, and Auto Battle for basic automated attacks. There are also options to instantly get all items, unlock all skills, and max out Gil. None of these touch the actual story or core mechanics, so they’re purely there for convenience, whether someone wants to blaze through the grinding or slow down and just enjoy the story without much resistance.

Turbo and Enemy Encounter Override stand out as the most genuinely useful of the bunch, since they let players control the pacing of a very long game and cut down time spent on repetitive fights. Supercharge is helpful for anyone who just wants to see the story play out without worrying too much about difficulty. Auto Battle, though, is a mixed bag. In FINAL FANTASY X, combat is built around switching characters based on their strengths and exploiting enemy weaknesses, and only active characters gain EXP, so Auto Battle’s basic attacks end up being more of a minor convenience than something players will lean on constantly. In FINAL FANTASY X-2, it’s a different story. With just three playable characters and a more standard leveling system, most random encounters can be handled with basic attacks, so Auto Battle paired with Turbo makes leveling up and farming AP for Dressphere abilities go by a lot faster.

      Handheld Play and Performance

This version keeps the touchscreen features from the original Switch release, like quick healing while exploring and the option to shorten summon animations in X or Dressphere transformation animations in X-2. These are nice to have, but next to the Boosters, they feel more like small extras rather than major selling points.

As for performance, it holds steady across the board. Like every other version of this remaster, it’s capped at 30 FPS. On Switch 2, resolution goes up to 1440p when docked and 1080p in handheld mode. The character models still clearly show their PlayStation 2 roots, but the game’s art direction has aged well, and it looks especially good on the smaller handheld screen. During play, performance stayed consistent, Turbo activated without any lag, and there was no noticeable stuttering.

One thing missing, though, is the ability to skip certain cutscenes, a feature the Steam version already has. This probably won’t bother newcomers much, but it’s a bit of a letdown for returning players hoping for a quicker replay.

How It Compares to Other Versions

FINAL FANTASY X/X-2 HD Remaster is available on quite a few platforms at this point, and each one offers something a little different. The Steam version includes the same Boosters as the Switch 2 release but goes further by adding cutscene skipping and auto-save, making it the most complete version overall. The PlayStation 4 and Xbox Series X|S versions don’t have the Boosters at all. The original Nintendo Switch version also lacks the Boosters and falls behind the Switch 2 release in both resolution and overall performance.

It’s also worth pointing out that there’s no way to carry over save data or upgrade from the original Switch version. Anyone who already owns that version will need to buy this one separately, and none of their previous progress transfers over.

FINAL FANTASY X: The Heart of the Collection

FINAL FANTASY X follows Tidus and the summoner Yuna as they journey to defeat Sin while slowly uncovering the truth behind the world of Spira. It’s widely considered one of the strongest entries in the series, and that reputation still holds up. Seeing Spira through Tidus’ eyes as an outsider lets players discover the world’s harsh realities alongside him, and the relationship between Tidus and Yuna remains one of gaming’s most memorable love stories. Even 25 years later, it still shows up on lists celebrating gaming’s most emotional moments.

Combat runs on the CTB, or Conditional Turn-Based Battle, system, which shows players the upcoming turn order so they can plan around enemy weaknesses, speed, and behavior. This system leans heavily on switching characters and managing turn order carefully, with each party member playing a clearly defined role. Leveling up is handled through the Sphere Grid instead of a traditional system. Players earn Ability Points through battles and use them to move across the grid, unlocking new abilities, magic, and stat boosts. While each character starts on their own path, players can eventually steer them in different directions. Yuna, for example, can move beyond her usual healing and summoning role and become a strong Black Magic user. That kind of flexibility is still one of the things that makes this game stand out.

In terms of pacing, FINAL FANTASY X sticks to a fairly linear structure with fewer side quests pulling players away from the main story, keeping the adventure focused. There are also several mini-games scattered throughout, mostly appearing later on and offering solid rewards, though some of them are notoriously difficult and can be a real obstacle for anyone trying to complete everything.

FINAL FANTASY X-2: A Lighter, More Divisive Sequel

FINAL FANTASY X-2 picks up after Sin’s defeat, following Yuna as she joins the Gullwings alongside Rikku and newcomer Paine to become a sphere hunter exploring a changed Spira. The tone here is noticeably lighter than the first game, and that shift is a big reason the sequel remains divisive among fans. Still, at its core, it’s about a summoner who once sacrificed everything for the world and is now trying to figure out who she is now that responsibility is gone. Yuna finally gets the chance to think about what she wants for herself instead of what the world needs from her.

The story unfolds through a chapter-based mission structure, letting players explore different regions, see how Spira has changed since Sin’s defeat, and catch up with returning characters as they settle into this new, more peaceful era.

Combat switches to an ATB system and introduces the Dressphere mechanic, letting players swap between different jobs and combat styles on the fly. Compared to X’s CTB system, battles move faster here, though that speed comes with less strategic depth. Some Dresspheres are clearly stronger than others, and once players get access to the better ones, there’s often little incentive to switch. Overall, enemy types don’t demand much variety in Dressphere choice during regular fights.

For players chasing full completion, FINAL FANTASY X-2 has a secret ending tied to a completion percentage system that tracks story progress and completed missions. Reaching 100% isn’t required to unlock it, but the requirements are strict enough that it’s easy to miss small details like specific conversations or events, even when following a guide, which can lower the completion percentage unexpectedly. For most players, this just adds an extra layer of things to look out for, but for anyone aiming for full completion, it can turn into a real challenge.

      Verdict

The Switch 2 version of FINAL FANTASY X/X-2 HD Remaster isn’t about new visuals or added content. Its real value comes from the Boosters and the improved handheld performance the Switch 2 hardware makes possible. FINAL FANTASY X is still the standout of the two, and despite its aging visuals, its story, CTB combat, and Sphere Grid system all still hold up remarkably well. FINAL FANTASY X-2 doesn’t quite match its predecessor’s reputation, but it does expand on Spira’s future and gives Yuna a chance to search for her own identity after saving the world, and its secret ending offers a satisfying send-off for fans invested in her and Tidus’ story.

For newcomers, this is currently the best console version to jump into, thanks to the Boosters making both games more approachable and the handheld option suiting a journey this long. For players who already own an earlier version, buying it again is a harder sell unless a better handheld experience is specifically what they’re after, since there’s no way to transfer saves or upgrade from a previous version. Between the lack of an upgrade path and the launch price, some players may find it worth waiting for a discount before picking this one up.
