Square Enix has announced that Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age Definitive Edition will be coming to the Nintendo Switch 2 on September 24, priced at $39.99.
The game will be available in both digital and physical formats, though buyers should note that the physical copy will come on a game-key card rather than a traditional cartridge. One important thing to keep in mind for existing players: save data from the original Switch version will not carry over to this new release, and Square Enix has confirmed there are no plans to offer an upgrade option for those who already own the Switch version.
Dragon Quest XI S first launched on Switch back on September 27, 2019, and later came to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC via Steam on December 4, 2020. For those unfamiliar with the game, Dragon Quest XI S is the eleventh mainline entry in the long-running Dragon Quest series. It follows a young man from a small village who sets off on a grand journey to discover the truth about himself and the world around him.
The Switch 2 version includes everything that was part of the original Definitive Edition, which means players get:
- New story chapters focused on the game’s party members
- Japanese voice acting alongside additional English voice options
- The ability to switch between 3D and 2D visual styles
- A full orchestral soundtrack

On top of all that, this Switch 2 release adds new optimization modes that let players choose between prioritizing graphics quality or performance, which is a new addition not found in previous versions of the game.
