Street Fighter 6 director Takayuki Nakayama has stepped forward to address the controversy surrounding Alex’s story, following widespread fan backlash over the character’s marriage to Patricia in the game’s updated narrative. What was supposed to be a celebratory moment for Alex’s launch in Street Fighter 6 quickly turned into an unexpected controversy after fans got a closer look at the story details surrounding his marriage to Patricia.
Nakayama posted a statement on X addressing the situation directly. “We apologize for any confusion that recent topics regarding Alex’s story may have caused,” he wrote.
He also added that a supplementary episode has been published on “Buckler’s Boot Camp” to give players more context into the characters’ backgrounds and feelings. Alongside the statement, Nakayama shared a new text episode written by the World Tour scenario team, featuring Tom talking about Alex and Patricia after their wedding with a bartender.
We apologize for any confusion that recent topics regarding Alex’s story may have caused.
While we have not changed the characters’ backstories, after internal review by the development team, we plan to revise certain text passages that may have been misleading in the near future.…— TAKA-nakayama (@takaNakayama) March 26, 2026
The backlash stems from how Alex and Patricia’s relationship has been portrayed across the Street Fighter series. In Street Fighter 3, Alex was introduced as an orphan raised under the care of Tom, who was described as a friend of his late father. Patricia is Tom’s biological daughter. Many fans interpreted this as Alex and Patricia growing up together as family.
That reading was supported by a line in Street Fighter 6’s own World Tour mode, where Alex says: “He’s my trainer, my manager, my adoptive dad… No, he is my dad.” An older Street Fighter 3 developer interview also stated that “there is no doubt that his real family is Tom and Patricia,” further cementing that family dynamic in many fans’ minds.
Street Fighter 6 then added another layer to this by revealing that Tom is also the cousin of Alex’s mother, meaning Alex and Patricia could also be blood-related as second cousins, on top of their adoptive family connection.

Adding fuel to the fire was a piece of artwork that placed an image of Alex holding Patricia as a baby side by side with the couple at their wedding, with Patricia also shown pregnant. Many fans found the combination of imagery unsettling. Capcom has not yet given a specific date for when the text revisions will go live, but the director’s statement confirms changes are coming.
