Capcom’s upcoming action game Onimusha: Way of the Sword has officially entered its final stages of development, according to director Nihei’s latest weekly memo shared with fans.
“The whole team is now working on the final stages of development,” Nihei wrote, adding that fans should look forward to a future announcement regarding the game’s release date.

The update came alongside the reveal of a brand new area called the Underground Laboratory, a research facility built by the game’s main villain, Dokyo, hidden beneath Kyoto. The facility was designed to create new Genma, the demonic enemies players will face throughout the game. Nihei described the area as having the feel of a traditional Japanese haunted house, with eerie shadows cast across shoji screens. Beyond that, specific details about the stage are being kept under wraps for now.
Onimusha: Way of the Sword is set during the Edo period and follows a new protagonist, the legendary swordsman Miyamoto Musashi who ends up wielding the Oni Gauntlet. His mission is to hunt down demons called Genma, described as fiends from the depths of Hell made real through something known as Malice.
The Oni Gauntlet is a returning mechanic from the series, letting players absorb enemy souls during combat to recover health and pull off powerful special moves. Gameplay shown so far has highlighted one-on-one duels, counterattacks, and ways the environment plays into fights.
As for length, the development team is aiming for a main story that runs around 20 hours, though this figure has not been finalized. Onimusha: Way of the Sword is set to launch in 2026 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam.
