A new presentation from Nintendo Direct has revealed fresh details about the upcoming The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, including a brand-new trailer and several major casting announcements. Among the biggest surprises is the reveal that Donald Glover will voice the iconic character Yoshi.
The announcement quickly generated discussion across the Mario fan community, with many expressing surprise at the casting choice while others praised the energy he brings to the role. The presentation also confirmed several additional actors joining the sequel’s expanding cast.
Donald Glover Joins the Mushroom Kingdom as Yoshi

The casting of Donald Glover as Yoshi was the biggest highlight of the presentation. Known for his work across film, television, and music, Glover’s addition to the Mario franchise caught many viewers off guard. However, early reactions online have been largely positive, with fans intrigued by how he will portray the beloved dinosaur companion.
Several other new cast members were also revealed during the livestream. Issa Rae will voice the royal character Honey Queen, while Luis Guzmán joins the film as the villain Wart.
The sequel will also introduce new characters to the film series. Benny Safdie has been cast as Bowser Jr., while Brie Larson will voice Princess Rosalina, a fan-favorite character first introduced in the game Super Mario Galaxy.
Returning Cast From The Super Mario Bros. Movie

Several actors from the original film will also return for the sequel. Chris Pratt reprises his role as Mario, while Anya Taylor-Joy returns as Princess Peach.
Charlie Day will once again voice Luigi, while Jack Black reprises his role as the villainous Bowser. The returning cast also includes Keegan-Michael Key as Toad and Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek.
These actors previously appeared in The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which premiered in April 2023 and went on to become one of the highest-grossing animated films of all time.
A New Adventure Across the Galaxy

The trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie reveals that the story takes place after the heroes’ victory over Bowser in the first film. This time, Mario, Luigi, and Princess Peach embark on an even larger adventure that takes them beyond the Mushroom Kingdom and into space.
The journey will see the characters visiting a wide range of imaginative planets, including a volcanic world, an underwater planet, and a futuristic neon-lit environment filled with gravity-defying obstacles. Along the way, the heroes team up with Rosalina and Yoshi while facing returning threats such as Bowser and the newly introduced Bowser Jr.
The film will also feature encounters with characters such as Wart, Honey Queen, and the fan-favorite character Birdo, further expanding the cinematic version of the Mario universe.
Another Nintendo Direct Focused on the Mario Movie

The March presentation marks the third Nintendo Direct dedicated specifically to The Super Mario Galaxy Movie within a few months. Nintendo previously held similar broadcasts in November 2025 and January 2026, gradually revealing more footage and story details ahead of the film’s release.
Nintendo confirmed that the presentation was focused entirely on the movie, meaning no new video game announcements were included in the showcase.
Fans Still Waiting for the Next General Nintendo Direct

While the Mario movie continues to dominate recent Nintendo presentations, many fans are still waiting for news about the company’s upcoming video games. The most recent general-purpose Nintendo Direct took place in September 2025 and included announcements for several major projects.
Among those announcements was Pokémon Pokopia, which was released worldwide on March 5, 2026 for the Nintendo Switch 2.
At the moment, Nintendo has only one confirmed first-party release date remaining: Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream, which is scheduled to launch on April 16, 2026.
Several other projects are currently targeting a 2026 release window and may appear in a future presentation. These include Yoshi and the Mysterious Book, Rhythm Heaven Groove, Splatoon Raiders, and Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave.
With Nintendo’s confirmed release roadmap currently ending in April, many fans believe another general Nintendo Direct may happen soon to outline the company’s next slate of titles.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Release Date

Directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is scheduled to premiere in theaters on April 1, 2026.
With its expanded cast, space-themed adventure, and the introduction of characters such as Rosalina and Yoshi, the sequel is shaping up to be one of the most ambitious adaptations of the Mario universe yet.
