Japanese indie developer Chilla’s Art has confirmed that UMIGARI, their unusual fishing game, will launch on February 4 on PC via Steam. The announcement comes three months after the game was first revealed, following an earlier mislabeled post and trailer.

UMIGARI continues Chilla’s Art’s tradition of taking ordinary Japanese settings and adding strange twists, similar to their previous games The Convenience Store and Shinkansen 0. Players take on the role of a fisherman navigating foggy Japanese waters alone, hunting increasingly unusual fish that can be processed into bait or sold to fishmongers. Money earned from catches can be used to upgrade hunting harpoons, boost the boat’s fuel capacity and speed, and customize the vessel’s appearance.
The focus appears to be on the sailing experience and discovering surreal locations and creatures. The game’s trailer shows various unique areas to explore, including what looks like an underwater city, along with massive unnamed creatures to hunt.

While the game features odd elements like fish-looking fishmongers and house-sized sea creatures, the developers have stated that UMIGARI is not a hardcore horror game. They describe it as different from their previous work, with “very light” horror intensity. A free demo is currently available for players who want to try the game before launch.
