SEGA has shared new concerns about recent sales performance. The company released several hit games in the past few years, yet many still fell short of forecasts. Players may be waiting for expanded or enhanced editions, especially after years of Atlus re-releases. That expectation is now shaping buying habits and slowing early sales.

SEGA Explains Lower-Than-Expected Catalogue Sales
SEGA now believes shifting player behaviour affects the performance of its catalogue games. The company revealed this during a shareholders Q&A published after its latest earnings report. Investors questioned why sales dipped and why revenue rose and fell so sharply with each new release. SEGA pointed to several factors, such as stronger competitors and higher launch prices.

Players may also hesitate to buy at release because they expect improved versions later. SEGA admitted its marketing failed to highlight each game’s core appeal. The team continues to study the issue and aims to strengthen launch strategies.
Atlus’ Legacy of Definitive Editions

SEGA avoided naming specific games, yet its comments clearly reflect Atlus’ long re-release tradition. Atlus often updates major titles with new content, characters, or systems. Persona 4 evolved into Golden. Persona 5 later returned as Royal. Shin Megami Tensei V reappeared as Vengeance with expanded routes and features. Fans now expect a more complete edition and delay their purchases.

This habit may explain the sales pattern of Metaphor: ReFantazio. The game launched with strong praise and sold one million copies on day one. It became Atlus’ fastest-selling title. Sales slowed afterward, reaching two million by July this year. Atlus has not announced an enhanced edition, but fans remain cautious due to past trends.
Looking Ahead to Persona 6 and “JRPG 3.0”
Director Katsura Hashino recently shared his plan to develop “JRPG 3.0.” He wants to push the genre forward with new ideas and design pillars. His comments arrived as interest in Persona 6 continues to rise.

Fans now watch both SEGA and Atlus closely, wondering how launch plans and future re-releases will evolve. Expectations for new games—and potential definitive versions—have never been higher. For more updates from SEGA, follow their official X account.
