Sony has revealed a new PlayStation 5 (PS5) Digital Edition model designed exclusively for the Japanese market during its State of Play presentation. The console will launch on November 21 with a price tag of 55,000 yen (approximately $356, tax included), and pre-orders begin November 13.
This Japanese-only version comes with notable restrictions. Players can only use it with PlayStation Network accounts registered in Japan, and the system language is locked to Japanese only. The console includes the standard 825 GB SSD storage found in other PS5 models.
The new model offers significant savings compared to the current multi-language PS5 available in Japan, which sells for 72,980 yen. At 17,980 yen cheaper, this makes the console more accessible to Japanese consumers. The pricing also positions it closer to Nintendo’s Switch 2, with only a 5,020 yen difference between the two systems.
Sony’s recent financial results show the PlayStation 5 has reached approximately 84.2 million units sold as of September 30, 2025. The company shipped 3.9 million PS5 units worldwide during the latest quarter, marking an increase of 100,000 units compared to the same period in the previous fiscal year.
PlayStation Network reported 119 million active users as of September 30, up three million from the previous year. Combined PS4 and PS5 software sales reached 80.3 million units during the quarter, an increase of 2.6 million year-over-year.
First-party game sales totaled 6.3 million units, up one million from the same period last fiscal year. Digital downloads continue to dominate, accounting for 72% of software sales—a 2% increase from the previous year.
