At TableCon Quest 2025, we got the chance to try out the new Godzilla Card Game, and it turned out to be a real hit with both longtime fans and newcomers to the kaiju franchise. The game brings the excitement of giant monster battles to the tabletop in an accessible format that’s easy to learn but offers strategic depth. Whether you grew up watching classic Godzilla films or discovered the franchise through recent blockbuster releases, this card game manages to appeal to kaiju fans across all generations.
We played matches between two distinct deck types that represent different periods of Godzilla history. The Minus One deck captures the gritty, survival-focused tone of the recent film, while the Heisei Series deck brings back the epic monster battles from the 1980s and 1990s. Playing with both decks showed us how the same game system can create very different experiences depending on which era you choose.
How the Game Works
The Godzilla Card Game is designed to be fast and cinematic, with most matches lasting 20-30 minutes. Here’s how it plays:
Setup is simple – each player picks a deck, shuffles their cards, draws a starting hand, and decides who goes first.
The game uses four main types of cards:
- Monster Cards are the core of the game, with your Godzilla moving through zones toward your opponent’s base
- Battle Cards let you use special abilities or counter opponent moves
- Strategy Cards go in a special zone and often tie into specific movies or time periods
- Rage Cards represent your monster’s fury and make your Godzilla stronger
Each turn follows a clear pattern: untap used cards, draw a new card, summon monsters, take actions with your creatures, and then end your turn. Your main Godzilla starts in Zone 1 and slowly advances toward Zone 8 on the opponent’s side. If Godzilla moves forward, he destroys any other monsters in his path, making positioning important.
Players can achieve victory through two different methods. A Counter Victory happens when you successfully use Battle Cards to counter your opponent’s Monster Cards four times. An Invasion Victory occurs when your Monster Card reaches your opponent’s Zone 8. This gives players different strategic paths to pursue during the game.
