TableCon Quest 2025 offered newcomers a chance to try Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) through their Beginner Friendly Intro Games, and we got to experience firsthand just how welcoming the hobby can be.
The session started with creating characters. We chose a female Barbarian – a tough, resilient character built for combat. The adventure kicked off at a festive banquet that quickly turned dangerous when attackers stormed in. This gave us an immediate taste of D&D’s action as our Barbarian charged into battle, taking hits while protecting the magic users in the group.
The combat was loud and exciting, with players shouting suggestions, rolling dice, and celebrating successful attacks. After defeating the attackers, we discovered the host’s daughter had been kidnapped, setting up the main quest that would drive the rest of the session.
One of the biggest surprises we found was how much creative freedom D&D offers. The rules don’t limit wild ideas – in fact, they encourage them. During our investigation, we decided to capture and question a rat for information. While this might sound silly, it worked within the game’s logic and the rat even became an ongoing companion.
The session highlighted how much cooperation matters in D&D. Every character’s abilities played a role, and positioning and strategy became important during fights. Even though most of us had just met, we quickly began working as a team, offering advice and encouragement to each other.
The Takeaway
The Beginner Friendly format at TableCon Quest removed the pressure that might intimidate new players. The focus stayed on fun rather than complex rules, letting creativity and imagination drive the story forward. We found ourselves laughing at unexpected moments and getting invested in our characters’ success.
