We recently had the opportunity to spend several hours with METAL GEAR SOLID Δ: SNAKE EATER to give you a preview of the highly anticipated remake of the stealth masterpiece. What we discovered was a game that walks a careful line between modernization and preservation, offering both longtime fans and newcomers two distinct ways to experience Snake’s jungle infiltration mission.
Two Styles, One Story
One of the most interesting features of MGS Δ is its dual approach to gameplay. Players can choose between Legacy Style and New Style from the start. During our hands-on time, we played using New Style to get a feel for how Konami has adapted the classic for today’s players.
Legacy Style preserves the original Metal Gear Solid 3 experience completely. This mode retains all the same scenes and opening sequences exactly as they appeared in the original game. The controls remain unchanged from the PlayStation 2 version, providing the same gameplay experience that fans remember. Essentially, Legacy Style delivers the identical experience as the original, just with updated graphics and modern hardware capabilities.

New Style takes a different approach while keeping the core story intact. This mode features updated user interfaces that have been redesigned for modern gaming standards. The control scheme has been modernized. While the story remains the same, some scenes have been altered visually, giving returning players a slightly different perspective on familiar moments. New Style represents Konami’s attempt to bring the classic game forward for today’s gaming audience.

Part of the difference between Legacy and New Style is the posters present throughout the game. In a recent interview, the developers revealed that rather than changing or removing the iconic pin-up posters due to modern sensibilities, they actually reached out to the original models from the 2004 game to collaborate on updated versions of their photos. All of the original models were excited to participate and provided new images for the remake, ensuring authenticity while giving longtime fans a fresh perspective on these memorable details.
The Challenge Remains
Make no mistake – MGS Δ is still a demanding game. The developers haven’t modernized certain aspects that some players might expect. There’s no minimap to guide you, and the game often leaves you wondering where to go next. This isn’t a bug – it’s a feature that stays true to the original design philosophy.
When you’re stuck, the solution is the same as it was in 2004: pick up your radio, adjust the frequency, and call your support team. Through their conversations, you’ll get hints about what to do next. It’s an old-school approach that might frustrate players used to modern quest markers and objective indicators.

This is a stealth-heavy experience where patience is key. Progress can feel slow, especially if you’re trying to avoid detection. The game rewards careful observation and planning over rushing in with guns blazing.
Combat mechanics remain faithful to the original. You can still carry unconscious enemies and drop them repeatedly to collect ammunition – a way to max out your inventory. Managing your stamina is crucial, as it affects everything from how long you can hold your breath while swimming to your overall combat effectiveness.

The survival aspects that made the original unique are all present. You can hunt and eat various creatures – snakes, lizards, and other small animals – to restore your stamina. These mechanics become especially important during underwater sections, where high stamina lets you hold your breath longer for extended dives.
Visual Upgrades, Multiplayer and More Content
The remake features impressive visual updates, including new character models and updated textures. One notable detail is how injuries affect Snake’s appearance. Wounds leave permanent scars that don’t disappear, adding a layer of visual storytelling that accumulates throughout your journey.
The environmental interaction has been enhanced with realistic details. When moving through mud, Snake’s camouflage and uniform become dirty, adding to the visual authenticity of navigating through jungle terrain.

PS5 players get access to the beloved Snake vs. Monkey minigame. Armed with a tranquilizer gun, you must find and capture monkeys in a time attack format. The monkeys will panic and run around if they spot you, adding a layer of strategy to what could have been a simple collection game. In a fun modern touch, Astrobot makes a cameo appearance in this mode.

For Xbox players they’ll receive a new crossover mini-game featuring Bomberman, offering a different gaming experience.

From the presentation the game will include Fox Hunt, a completely original multiplayer mode that uses the thrill of hiding and seeking. This online mode is centered around the core elements of Metal Gear Solid, creating a unique online experience for the series.
Fox Hunt will be an additional mode in MGS Δ that offers an online multiplayer experience centered around sneaking and survival elements. The mode incorporates popular elements from MGS while delivering a thrilling hide-and-seek gameplay experience.

Players can work as rival candidates alongside the FOX Unit to complete missions and determine who is best suited for the FOX Unit. Weapons and equipment need to be acquired onsite, and players must survive until the end while completing the mission.
Who Should Play This?
MGS Δ is clearly designed for fans of the original who want to revisit Snake Eater with modern visuals while keeping the core experience intact. The Legacy Style option ensures purists can enjoy the game exactly as they remember it.
However, this remake isn’t for everyone. If you’re expecting a fast-paced action game like Horizon Zero Dawn or God of War Ragnarök, you’ll likely be disappointed. This is a methodical, story-driven stealth experience that demands patience and strategic thinking.

New players who appreciate slower-paced games with deep mechanics and storytelling will find plenty to enjoy, but they should understand what they’re getting into. This isn’t a game that holds your hand or rushes you through objectives.
Final Thoughts
METAL GEAR SOLID Δ: SNAKE EATER succeeds in its primary goal of preserving what made the original special while giving it a modern visual upgrade. The dual style system is a smart compromise that should satisfy both longtime fans and newcomers willing to embrace its unique pace and design philosophy.

Whether you choose Legacy or New Style, you’re getting a faithful recreation of one of gaming’s most beloved stealth adventures. Just be prepared for a game that respects your intelligence but won’t make things easy for you.
