The upcoming Silent Hill f will mix psychological and supernatural horror in a unique way, according to writer Ryukishi07, who recently spoke about the game at Anime Expo 2025 in Los Angeles.
During a panel discussion with producer Motoi Okamoto and composer Akira Yamaoka, the creator of Higurashi and Umineko explained his different approach to writing for the Silent Hill franchise. Unlike his usual novels where he includes many themes and complex character elements, Ryukishi07 focused on just one main theme for Silent Hill f.
The writer used an interesting comparison to describe how the game’s horror will work. He said the psychological and supernatural horror elements will be like salad dressing – at first, they’ll be completely mixed together so you can’t tell them apart, but as you play, they’ll slowly separate into different layers.
“The monsters in Silent Hill 2, for example, are indistinguishable from reality,” Ryukishi07 explained. Players only start to understand what’s real and what comes from the main character James Sunderland’s mind as they dig deeper into the story.

In Silent Hill f, players will start with both types of horror blended together. Ryukishi07 says this natural way of learning the story and filling in missing pieces is part of what makes the game appealing.
The writer also noted that Silent Hill f isn’t just about scaring players. Like other Silent Hill games, the story could become something sad or even about love, depending on how players see it. Silent Hill f is scheduled to release on September 25 for PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X|S.
