Horror game developer Supermassive Games announced Tuesday that it will be laying off up to 36 employees as part of what the company calls a “redundancy consultation process.” The U.K.-based studio said the decision wasn’t made easily and promised to provide full support to affected workers.
This marks the second round of layoffs for Supermassive Games in less than a year. The company previously cut 90 jobs in February 2024, which represented about 26% of its workforce at the time. The latest cuts come as the gaming industry continues to face challenges with studios restructuring to adapt to changing market conditions.

Along with the job cuts, Supermassive Games also announced that its upcoming sci-fi horror game Directive 8020 has been pushed back. Originally planned for an October 2, 2025 release on Xbox Series X|S, PC, and PlayStation 5, the game will now launch sometime in the first half of 2026.
Directive 8020 is the fifth entry in The Dark Pictures Anthology series. The game follows a team of astronauts who crash-land on an alien planet and encounter a terrifying creature that can copy human appearance while taking monstrous forms.
However, fans of the Little Nightmares series have some good news. Little Nightmares 3, which Supermassive Games is developing as a sequel to the previous games made by Tarsier Studios, is still on track for its October 9, 2025 release date. The game will be available on the same platforms as Directive 8020.
