This is the premise of Ark of Charon, a fresh new title that combines colony simulation and tower defense. Players embark on a journey to guide a giant, beast-like sapling of a World Tree to its nursery and take on the role of the tree’s caretaker. In this Ark of Charon Preview, players will discover they have the freedom to control various Golems and transform the tree into a fortified mobile fortress as they progress on their journey.
Starting Your Journey on Ark of Charon
There are two distinct modes available in the game:
Idyllic Journey, is for beginners looking to ease into the game. It is highly recommended for newcomers as it features no time limits, allowing players to grasp the fundamentals of the game at their own pace. Enabling you to explore new worlds and scenarios stress-free.
New World, is catered to experienced players familiar with colony simulation games. This mode is designed to present a more challenging experience, offering a higher difficulty level. Despite its increased difficulty, New World promises a rewarding gameplay experience for those seeking a more competitive and stimulating challenge.
At the start of your journey, players receive three Golems, each ready to assign tasks to develop the World Tree platform. In the game the stone floor serves as the World Tree’s platform where players must construct everything needed before advancing to the next area.
Resource and Base Building
This setup allows easy access for them and simplifies transporting everything when relocating. Additionally, we can designate a Farming Zone on the terrain, where Golems will automatically cultivate and harvest crops, effectively resolving any food shortages.
As we venture further in the map, players will encounter monsters so there is a need for defensive rooms, while workshops like work tables, cooking pots, and furnaces must be indoors for the journey to operate effectively. Players can craft rooms from diverse materials, starting with basic wood and progressing to more robust options such as stone, cement, iron, or even precious metals.
A very important part of the game is Priority Setting, significantly boosting the overall efficiency by assigning Golems tasks aligned with their strengths. This not only speeds up their work but also allows different Golems to collaborate on various tasks simultaneously.
On The Move
You cannot stay in one place for too long; players must keep moving as the Dark Storms approach, causing damage to your Golems and buildings. Once you have enough resources, get ready to move. To embark on another area, access the “World Map” at the top right of the screen and select your destination. Wait for all Golems to gather, then press the “Ready to Depart” button to begin.
During the journey, you’ll encounter darkness and face monster attacks. If the World Tree’s core at the center is destroyed, it’s game over. With that in mind, it’s best to strategically place weapons and defensive walls to survive monster battles. Combat progresses automatically, but you can also manually operate weapons to engage foes.
Successfully completing a journey allows you to collect souls from defeated enemies. Accumulate enough souls to spawn new Golems from the World Tree’s core. Combining souls determines the types and strengths of the Golems spawned, each with preferred tasks.
As you advance, stronger enemies will challenge you, requiring swift collection of higher-grade resources to fortify your fortress and protect the core.
Verdict
In terms of gameplay, Ark of Charon doesn’t break new ground and shares similarities with other survival games. But its distinctive feature lies in incorporating tower defense elements, adding a sense of urgency as players must fortify their defenses before the dark storm arrives
However, you can feel that the game’s pace and intensity become unbalanced, especially in the mid-game when they need better defense buildings against stronger enemies. At times, the Golems struggle to gather materials fast enough, which leads to premature progression and resulting in significant damage to structures. Sometimes, a bit of luck seems necessary to play smoothly.
Regarding graphics and sound, Ark of Charon embraces a Western fantasy art style with visuals that are decent but not exceptional. Players who have high standards for graphics may find the game somewhat simplistic, while the user interface design leans towards a straightforward, almost minimalistic approach. The game features well-crafted sound effects that include serene melodies for routine tasks, intense compositions during storms and battles, and distinct audio cues for mining various resources.
Overall, Ark of Charon is a serviceable game with room for improvement across different aspects. While its gameplay lacks major flaws, it has the potential to captivate players, drawing them into the game to the extent that they may lose track of time.
