Just four days after the post-apocalyptic zombie survival MMO The Day Before hit Steam early access, developer Fntastic announced the closure of its studio.

According to the official statement on Twitter, the studio behind The Day Before is shutting down after the game failed financially.

“Unfortunately, The Day Before has failed financially, and we lack the funds to continue. All income received is being used to pay off debts to our partners,” said the company in the official statement announcing its studio closure.

“We invested all our efforts, resources, and man-hours into the development of The Day Before, which was our first huge game.”

“It’s important to note that we didn’t take any money from the public during the development of The Day Before; there were no pre-orders or crowdfunding campaigns.”

“We worked tirelessly for five years, pouring our blood, sweat, and tears into the game.”

This part of the statement seems to contradict the game already launched in early access, costing $39 USD with many players already spending the money to play the still-in-development build of the game.

As of writing, The Day Before publisher Mytona has opened up to refund players with an apology saying, “We are sorry for the fact that the game didn’t meet the expectations of the majority of the players.”

Fntastic also noted that the future of The Day Before as well as their asymmetric multiplayer title Propnight is unknown, however, the servers will remain operational.

“We apologize if we didn’t meet your expectations. We did everything within our power, but unfortunately, we miscalculated our capabilities.”

“Creating games is an incredibly challenging endeavor.”

The company then closes its statement thanking its players and listing its portfolio of game releases.
