Pop quizzes are fun, but teachers are (usually) not. That’s where Trivial Pursuit: Live 2 comes in and we’re here to review this trivia game. Based on the Trivial Pursuit board game, players can test their wits on PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and Google Stadia.

The game can be played with up to four players as a couch co-op (more like couch PvP) game or online against friends or random players. If you have no friends, you can play against the game’s AI. For this review, we got the entire office to take turns and play Trivial Pursuit: Live 2.

Presentation

There are tonnes of trivia games and apps on mobile out there, but where Trivial Pursuit: Live 2 really shines is its presentation. Each match in the game takes place as a game show, the kind that you’ve seen on TV if you grew up with that.

Everything is brimming with colour and life. From the way each character expresses themself to the voice of the host giving fitting remarks of the situation, the game is thoroughly engaging from the get-go.

If there is one feature I wish that the game had, it’ll be character creation. With so much pizazz to the game’s presentation, it’ll be great if players could create their own avatars instead of just picking the premade ones.

Gameplay

Like any trivia game, Trivial Pursuit: Live 2 is all about answering questions. However, it’s how you do it that makes the game a great party game.

Before you get the brain juices flowing, you can choose to either play a short or long game, depending on your preference or time constraints. There is also an option to choose between Standard or Family modes—the former is geared towards adult players while the latter accommodates younger players with easier questions. Should you want to team up with another player in a 2v2 instead of a free for all, there’s also the option for that.

Questions in Trivial Pursuit: Live 2 come in various categories, such as Entertainment, Arts, History, Science & Nature, Geography, and Sports & Leisure. These are selected in each round, where players compete to get a wedge piece—the first player to get all of them wins.

What makes the quizzes fun is the various formats they’re conducted in. Some rounds require you to pick answers faster than everyone else, while in other rounds, you may need to choose answers off a board, gaining repeated attempts for each correct answer. In true game show fashion, the game gets more intense as you approach the later rounds, so the threat of a comeback keeps things exciting.

It’s worth noting that many of the questions are clearly designed with a Western audience in mind, so if you’re like us who’re based in Malaysia, you’re gonna spend more than half of the time guessing answers.

Closing Thoughts

Trivial Pursuit: Live 2 is a fun party game to enjoy with friends and family. The presentation is vibrant and matches are hardly ever boring. The game is more Western-centric with its questions though, but if you’re fine with that, then you’ll probably find the game to be a nice trivia video game.
