Less than a month after its launch, Elden Ring has reportedly broke 12 million units in global sales, a new record for the From Software’s Soulsborne series.
According to From Software, over 1 million of the global Elden Ring sales have been from Japan, and the game accomplished these numbers in little more than two weeks since the game’s release.
“It’s astonishing to see just how many people have been playing “Elden Ring.” I’d like to extend our heartfelt thanks on behalf of the entire development team”, says From Software CEO Hidetaka Miyazaki.
This puts the game as the all-time highest selling game in the Soulsborne series, by a massive margin, as analyst Daniel Ahmad notes:
“Just to put into context how much the Souls genre has grown. The Dark Soul (sic) series hadn’t even sold 12 million units as a whole until after Dark Souls 3 came out”.
The Souls series had always been seen as a niche genre- there are reports of Miyazaki having to hide details like the genre-defining death punishments in the original Demon’s Souls from PlayStation back during the game’s development, for fear that they’d ask him to remove it to better cater to casual audiences.
With that in mind it’s not hard to argue that Elden Ring is the series first mainstream success in every sense of the word.
