PlayStation has acquired Destiny creators Bungie, in a 3.6 billion dollar deal, following a series of high profile acquisitions in the game industry.

While Bungie will be joining the PlayStation group of studios, it looks like they won’t be limited to working on first party titles.

In a statement on the Bungie website, they described the situation as Bungie still being allowed to publish their games independently on platforms of their choosing.

“We will continue to independently publish and creatively develop our games. We will continue to drive one, unified Bungie community. Our games will continue to be where our community is, wherever they choose to play”, they said on their website.

In an interview with GamesIndustry.Biz, Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan also reassured fans that they had no plans to disable non-PlayStation versions of Destiny 2.

“The first thing to say unequivocally is that Bungie will stay an independent, multiplatform studio and publisher. Pete [Parsons, CEO] and I have spoken about many things over recent months, and this was one of the first, and actually easiest and most straightforward, conclusions we reached together”, he says. “Everybody wants the extremely large Destiny 2 community, whatever platform they’re on, to be able to continue to enjoy their Destiny 2 experiences. And that approach will apply to future Bungie releases. That is unequivocal.

It also looks like the acquisition will see more resources allocated to the development of Destiny 2, as Bungie intends to ramp up production for the live service title.

“With SIE’s support, the most immediate change you will see is an acceleration in hiring talent across the entire studio to support our ambitious vision”, the statement reads. “If this speaks to you, and you want to help us put a dent in the universe, we are hiring across all disciplines for Destiny 2 and for all new worlds beyond.”

PlayStation Studios head Hermen Hulst also tweeted out his vote of confidence in the developer:

“Bungie create community-driven games with outstanding technology that are enormous fun to play, and I know that everyone at PlayStation Studios will be excited about what we can share and learn together.”
