Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has shared rare insight into the company’s gaming direction, confirming that Xbox’s future lies beyond traditional console boundaries. Speaking on a podcast, Nadella said players will soon enjoy Xbox games “everywhere, on every platform.”

Although this idea echoes Xbox’s long-running “Play Anywhere” initiative, Nadella’s comments suggest the company’s next phase will be more ambitious. His remarks align with recent statements from other Microsoft executives, hinting that the next Xbox will merge console power with PC flexibility.

A PC-Console Hybrid Future

Nadella hinted that the next Xbox may blur the lines between console and PC gaming. “We built the console because we wanted to build a better PC,” he explained. The statement reinforces growing speculation that Microsoft is developing a hybrid system designed to unite both platforms.

He also said Microsoft plans to continue innovating across both the PC and console sides of its hardware business. Xbox president Sarah Bond described the next console as “a very premium and high-end curated experience,” while Phil Spencer said it will focus on “connecting all your devices in one place.” Together, these comments point to a more unified, cross-platform Xbox ecosystem.

“It’s kind of funny that people think of the console and PC as two different things,” Nadella added. “Console has an experience that is unparalleled. It delivers performance that pushes the system forward.”

“The Biggest Gaming Business Is the Windows Business”

“The biggest gaming business is the Windows business,” Nadella said firmly. He emphasized that Microsoft’s gaming foundation remains rooted in Windows, where platforms like Steam continue to thrive.

Following the Activision Blizzard acquisition, Microsoft became one of the largest publishers in the world. Nadella compared this approach to the success of Microsoft Office, which expanded to Mac and other operating systems to reach more users.

Xbox’s Expanding Ecosystem

Microsoft’s broader goal is clear which is to reach players wherever they are. Xbox titles such as Sea of Thieves and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle have already launched on PlayStation. Meanwhile, Microsoft continues to invest in cloud, mobile, and TV platforms to grow its audience even further.

“We’re going to be everywhere, on every platform,” Nadella said. “Whether it’s consoles, PC, mobile, cloud gaming, or TV, we just want gamers everywhere to enjoy our games.”

Finally, Xbox Studios head Matt Booty explained that Microsoft’s biggest competition is no longer limited to PlayStation or Nintendo. “Our competition is everything from TikTok to movies,” he said, underscoring Xbox’s shift toward a broader entertainment market.
