Pokémon fans got a surprise during today’s broadcast of the 2026 Pokémon World Championships, as organizers announced a new feature length anime film called Pokémon: Wild Card. The movie will follow a Pokémon Trading Card Game player and his partner Mimikyu, and is set to release sometime in 2027 and beyond.

Alongside the announcement, a first look trailer and teaser visual were shown to audiences. The trailer’s description simply invites viewers to get ready for the story of a TCG player and his Mimikyu, without revealing further plot details. Pokémon: Wild Card marks the franchise’s first new feature length anime film in several years. The last Pokémon movie made was Pokémon the Movie: Secrets of the Jungle, which released in Japanese theaters in 2020 before arriving worldwide on Netflix in 2021. The last Pokémon film to receive a theatrical release outside Japan was 2018’s Pokémon the Movie: The Power of Us, which had a limited release through Fathom Events.

The film is being produced by Studio CloverWorks, known for anime titles such as My Dress-Up Darling and BOCCHI THE ROCK!. Katsuhiko Kitada will direct the project. Kitada has previously worked on other well known anime projects, including The First Slam Dunk, Attack on Titan, and Naruto: Shippuden. Akemi Hayashi, known for character design work on BANANA FISH, will handle character designs for the film.

With production talent from CloverWorks attached and a multi year release window in mind, more details on Pokémon: Wild Card are expected to surface as the film moves closer to release.
