The cafe first opened its doors in October 2016, originally located in the Yodobashi Camera electronics store. Its inaugural theme celebrated the launch of Final Fantasy XV, featuring specially designed menu items and interior decorations. In January 2020, the cafe relocated to its current spot near JR Akihabara Station, marking the occasion with a Final Fantasy VII Remake-themed celebration.

Throughout its operation, the Square Enix Cafe has served as a hub for fans to experience themed food, drinks, and merchandise tied to the company’s popular game franchises. The announcement of the closure came through the restaurant’s website, with management apologizing for the suddenness of the decision. While the cafe itself will cease operations, plans are in place to reopen the attached merchandise corner following renovations, though no specific timeline has been provided. The reason for the closure has not been officially disclosed.
