Shigeru Miyamoto, the legendary designer behind the Super Mario series, recently shared his thoughts on the upcoming Super Mario Galaxy movie and the future of Mario games. Additionally, he spoke with Casa Brutus, a Japanese magazine focused on design and architecture. The interview is part of the series’ 40th anniversary celebrations, and it covers both the franchise’s past and future.

Mario Galaxy Movie: Fun in the Final Frontier
Miyamoto expressed confidence in the Super Mario Galaxy movie. He believes it will follow the success of the $1.3 billion-grossing Super Mario Bros. Movie. “The first movie was possible because so many people worked together,” he said, via machine translation. “Moreover, I tried to make sure the team functioned smoothly. Many people said they’d like to work on the next project, so I guess that means we succeeded to some extent.”

Regarding the sequel’s setting, Miyamoto teased: “The setting is, just as the title says, the galaxy, that’s all I can really say. We’re in the final stages of production, but I think it’s going to be fun.” Furthermore, Miyamoto added that he keeps working “until it becomes fun,” showing his confidence in the project.
Mario’s Legacy and Game Development Philosophy
Reflecting on 40 years of Super Mario games, Miyamoto shared that he has “deep feelings” for every entry he worked on. For example, he recalled exploring new possibilities in 2D with Super Mario World and revisiting childhood memories in 3D with Super Mario 64.

Even today, he ensures each game maintains its signature “Mario-ness.” “I have teammates who help maintain the world of Mario,” he said. “However, I still play the first 30 minutes of each game myself. I check the interface thoroughly to make sure it really feels like Mario.”
Looking Forward: Mario’s Future Beyond Games
Miyamoto hinted at exciting new directions for Mario. He is enthusiastic about the franchise expanding into movies, theme parks, and other collaborations. “With the help of passionate people outside our company, Mario has expanded into theme parks and movies. Therefore, I’m looking forward to seeing how it develops from here,” he said.

He also reflected on creating new games for modern consoles. “Up through Super Mario Odyssey, I feel we’ve done almost everything possible on the Switch. In the past, a new console meant a new Mario game. I wonder how the team will approach the next challenge.

Nevertheless, maybe I’ll say, ‘I won’t look anymore!’ (laughs) I just hope to stay healthy until Mario’s 50th anniversary.” Additionally, fans can enjoy insights from Miyamoto and the original Super Mario Bros. team in the first issue of the Nintendo Museum Official Book.
