Nintendo has officially clarified where Metroid Prime 4: Beyond fits within the Metroid franchise timeline. The confirmation addresses long-standing fan questions following the game’s lengthy development and recent launch. While Metroid Prime 4: Beyond introduces major gameplay and narrative changes, Nintendo has now clearly defined how it connects to Samus Aran’s overarching story.
A Familiar Formula With Major Structural Changes

Metroid Prime 4: Beyond follows several familiar narrative themes from earlier entries while reshaping the series’ structure. The game takes place on Viewros, a previously undocumented planet built around a massive desert hub. Players explore the world freely, gather resources, and travel between different environments across the planet.
Nintendo introduced new traversal tools to support the expanded scale of Metroid Prime 4: Beyond. Samus can ride the Vi-O-La motorcycle, which allows faster movement across the desert. The game also grants Samus psychic abilities, expanding both combat and puzzle-solving mechanics. These additions mark one of the most significant gameplay shifts in the Metroid Prime series.
The story of Metroid Prime 4: Beyond also introduces Myles Mackenzie, a companion who assists Samus in establishing a base camp on Viewros. This design choice represents a clear departure from the franchise’s traditional emphasis on isolation and environmental storytelling.
Nintendo Confirms Timeline Placement

In a statement shared with Famitsu, Nintendo confirmed that Metroid Prime 4: Beyond takes place after Super Metroid and before Metroid Fusion. Despite this placement, Nintendo emphasized that Metroid Prime 4: Beyond exists within what it describes as “another dimension.” Because of this, the game does not directly impact the mainline 2D Metroid timeline.
Nintendo also positioned Metroid Prime 4: Beyond as an accessible entry point for new players. According to the company, players can experience the game without prior knowledge of earlier Metroid Prime titles.
A Restarted Development Cycle

Metroid Prime 4: Beyond followed an unusually difficult development journey. Nintendo first announced Metroid Prime 4: Beyond in 2017, with Bandai Namco Studios initially handling development. After several years of limited updates, Nintendo confirmed that Retro Studios had taken over the project.
Retro Studios restarted development on Metroid Prime 4: Beyond from the ground up. This reboot extended production for several more years, resulting in a release nearly eight years after the original reveal. Nintendo ultimately released Metroid Prime 4: Beyond in December 2025.
Mixed Reception Despite Commercial Success

Reception to Metroid Prime 4: Beyond has been mixed among fans and critics. Many players criticized the open-world structure and NPC-focused storytelling in Metroid Prime 4: Beyond. Myles Mackenzie became a frequent point of contention, with some fans arguing that the character clashes with the series’ tone.
Despite the criticism, Metroid Prime 4: Beyond earned praise for several of its new systems. Players responded positively to Samus’ psychic powers, citing their impact on combat depth. The dungeon design in Metroid Prime 4: Beyond also received strong feedback, with many noting that it preserved the franchise’s signature tension and atmosphere.
While Metroid Prime 4: Beyond has not achieved universal acclaim, it represents a clear effort to push the franchise forward. Nintendo’s confirmation of the game’s timeline placement reinforces Metroid Prime 4: Beyond as a standalone chapter that explores new ideas while remaining anchored to the larger Metroid universe.
