NieR: Automata creator Yoko Taro revealed at G-CON 2025 in Korea that he has spent the past few years working on several unannounced projects. Many of them never reached completion because development stopped midway, often for reasons he chose not to detail. He shared this insight during a joint panel with Bayonetta director Hideki Kamiya, offering fans a clearer look at his recent creative efforts.

Fans Misunderstand His Silence

For years, fans have joked that “Yoko Taro doesn’t do any work.” Yoko addressed this perception directly, explaining how the lack of public releases led many to assume he hasn’t been creating anything. He pushed back against the idea, saying that he has been consistently involved in new concepts and proposals.

“I often get asked why I’m not making a new NieR sequel,” he said. “People think I’ve been doing nothing, but that simply isn’t true. I spent a lot of time developing ideas that never moved forward.” Although those cancelled projects never reached players, Yoko pointed out that they still represented real effort, time, and collaboration behind the scenes.

His comments helped fans understand that his silence doesn’t reflect inactivity. Instead, it shows how unpredictable creative work can be, especially when dealing with unusual or experimental ideas.
Cancellations Don’t Discourage Him

Yoko described cancellations as a natural part of his process. Instead of treating them as failures, he uses them to refine his direction. He prefers halting a project early rather than releasing something he feels unsure about. “I don’t see cancellations as negative,” he explained.

“If I come up with something that feels too strange or doesn’t land the way I imagined, stopping the project makes more sense than forcing it into release.” His approach shows a clear preference for quality and creative honesty over output for the sake of output. Each abandoned idea still contributes to his growth. Yoko views every attempt as a step toward a better project, even if the public never sees the result.
What The Future Might Hold

Many fans still hope for a major announcement, especially with the 10th anniversary of NieR: Automata approaching in 2027. Yoko didn’t confirm any plans, but he hinted that he continues to experiment and explore new ideas. His ongoing effort suggests that something new will eventually surface.

For now, players can take comfort in knowing that Yoko remains creatively active. His dedication to bold storytelling and unusual worlds stays strong, and whenever his next project appears, fans can expect something distinctively “Yoko Taro.”
