Niantic, the company behind the global phenomenon Pokémon GO, has reached an agreement and sells its games business to mobile gaming leader Scopely for $3.5 billion. The deal, which includes an additional $350 million cash distribution from Niantic, brings the total value to approximately $3.85 billion for Niantic equity holders.
The acquisition includes Niantic’s flagship titles Pokémon GO, Pikmin Bloom, and Monster Hunter Now, along with the development teams behind these games. According to the announcement, these teams will continue their work under Scopely’s ownership, with plans to maintain the games’ ongoing development and live service operations.

“Scopely’s focus on building and operating incredible live services, its exceptional experience working with the world’s biggest and most beloved intellectual property, and care for its player communities and game-making teams make it the perfect fit for our games,” Niantic stated in their announcement.
The company emphasized that players should expect continuity, noting that “the games, apps, services, and events they know and love will continue to receive Scopely’s ongoing investment, driven by the same teams that have always created these experiences.”

Simultaneously, Niantic is spinning off its geospatial AI technology business into a new company called Niantic Spatial Inc., which will be led by John Hanke. This new entity will be funded with $250 million, including $200 million from Niantic’s balance sheet and a $50 million investment from Scopely. All of Niantic’s original investors will remain shareholders in Niantic Spatial.
For Pokémon GO’s more than 100 million annual players, the deal promises continued support for the game that has generated over a billion friend connections and encouraged players to travel more than 30 billion miles since its launch nearly a decade ago.
