NetherRealm Studios has officially announced it will cease development of new content for Mortal Kombat 1, marking the end of the fighting game’s post-launch update cycle. The studio confirmed that no additional downloadable content characters or story chapters will be released moving forward.
In a statement shared on social media, NetherRealm acknowledged fan requests for continued game support but explained the decision was necessary to allocate resources toward their next project. “We understand this will be disappointing for fans, but our team at NetherRealm needs to shift focus to the next project in order to make it as great as we possibly can,” the studio stated.
We are hearing players’ requests for continued game support of Mortal Kombat 1, and, while we will continue to support Mortal Kombat 1 through balance adjustments and fixes, there will not be additional DLC characters or story chapters released from this point on.

While new content development has ended, NetherRealm committed to maintaining the game through ongoing balance adjustments and technical fixes. This announcement comes shortly after the release of Mortal Kombat 1: Definitive Edition earlier this month, which bundled the base game with its Khaos Reigns story expansion, character packs, and additional content across multiple platforms.
The decision has drawn mixed reactions from the community. Some players expressed frustration with what they perceive as an incomplete product, citing missing quality-of-life features, absent online lobbies, and restricted cosmetic content. Others noted they anticipated this outcome following the Definitive Edition’s release, viewing it as a typical conclusion to NetherRealm’s support cycle for previous titles.

NetherRealm has not officially revealed details about their next project, though industry speculation points toward a potential Injustice 3 development. The studio’s shift in focus follows a pattern established with previous releases, where support typically concludes after major content expansions and definitive editions.
