Larian Studios is using generative AI to help with game development, but CEO Swen Vincke has made it clear that the upcoming Divinity game will not include any AI-generated content in the final product. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Vincke clarified the studio’s position on AI and concept art. He stressed that Larian has 72 artists, including 23 concept artists, and is hiring more. “The art they create is original and I’m very proud of what they do,” he wrote.
Holy fuck guys we’re not “pushing hard” for or replacing concept artists with AI.
We have a team of 72 artists of which 23 are concept artists and we are hiring more. The art they create is original and I’m very proud of what they do.
I was asked explicitly about concept art…

Vincke explained that AI tools are used similarly to Google or art books as a way to explore references during early planning stages. The tools may create rough outlines for composition, but these are replaced with original concept art created by the studio’s artists. “We’ve hired creatives for their talent, not for their ability to do what a machine suggests,” he said.
Previously speaking with Bloomberg after announcing the new Divinity game at The Game Awards last week, Vincke explained how the studio is approaching AI technology. Following the success of Baldur’s Gate 3, Larian is exploring different tools to help with their next project.

According to Bloomberg, the studio uses AI to explore ideas, expand internal presentations, develop concept art, and write placeholder text during development. However, Vincke emphasized that the final game will be entirely human-made. “Everything is human actors; we’re writing everything ourselves,” he said.
While some team members initially pushed back against using AI, Vincke stated that “at this point everyone at the company is more or less OK with the way we’re using it.” He noted that AI hasn’t massively improved efficiency as some might expect.
The studio is trying to reduce development time compared to Baldur’s Gate 3. Beyond AI tools, Larian plans to develop Divinity’s quests and storylines at the same time rather than one after another. The company is also expanding its team size.
