The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) has teamed up with Japanese game developer Historia to create Real Moon, a new and free simulation game that lets players explore an accurate recreation of the lunar surface.
The game uses Digital Elevation Model data and observational information provided by JAXA to build a realistic version of the Moon in Unreal Engine 5. Historia designed features like crater slopes and rock placement patterns based on scientific research papers and studies. Real Moon also includes a day-night cycle with the Sun, Earth, and Moon moving through their actual positions over time.

This isn’t an action game with combat or traditional objectives. Real Moon focuses on pure exploration, giving players a single mission while allowing them to roam the lunar surface on foot or in a space rover.
The simulator’s approach prioritizes realism over entertainment features. Players can examine the Moon’s geographical characteristics up close, experiencing the landscape that astronauts and space missions have studied for decades. The inclusion of both walking and rover exploration gives players different ways to navigate the environment.

A complete playthrough takes between 15 and 30 minutes, offering players a detailed look at Earth’s natural satellite without requiring a major time commitment. The short duration makes it accessible for anyone curious about lunar geography or space exploration. Real Moon is currently available to download for free on Steam for PC.
