It caught everyone by surprise this morning when GTA 6- arguably one of the most anticipated titles in the past 5 years suddenly dropped its trailer, due out tonight, more than 12 hours earlier than intended as a result of leaks.

In the time since it looks like the leaker’s Twitter account has been suspended- though with Rockstar having acknowledged the leak and uploading the trailer early, it looks like whatever they’d set out to do had been accomplished.

As The Verge’s Tom Warren points out, the leaker’s account was suspended within 30 minutes of posting the leak, and just 10 minutes before Rockstar published the trailer.

“Our trailer has leaked so please watch the real thing on YouTube”, writes the official Rockstar Twitter account before posting a link to the official upload.

Many staff who worked on the game had also shared their frustration at the leak: with the trailer announced ahead of time it was set to be a marquee event with the whole world watching it at the same time.

“I was hoping to watch this for the first time tomorrow along with my fellow teammates and coworkers”, writes Javier Altman, a senior character animator. “I feel we deserved that moment”.

Phil B also shared a similar sentiment:

“Enjoy, folks. Would have been nice to do this with all of you at the same time”, he says.

The history of GTA 6 is one set against a backdrop of leaks- last year, an entire build of the game found its way online, prompting the announcement of its existence.

It’s understandable that many staff would be upset about the leaks- marketing schedules are about controlling the release of information, and having someone upload a low res version shilling cryptocurrency isn’t a good way to make sure the game makes a strong first impression.
