Square Enix has officially announced Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles, bringing the beloved tactical RPG to modern consoles with significant improvements. The game will launch on September 30 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, Switch 2, PlayStation 4, Switch, and PC via Steam.
This isn’t just a simple remaster – Square Enix is giving the 1997 classic a complete overhaul. The enhanced version features fully voiced dialogue throughout the game, updated graphics, and a redesigned user interface to make the complex strategy game more accessible to newcomers. Players will also get quality-of-life improvements like auto-save, adjustable difficulty settings, and the ability to speed up battles.
The story follows Ramza Beoulve, a young noble caught in the political turmoil of the Kingdom of Ivalice. The game’s script has been updated and enriched, building on the acclaimed War of the Lions translation that fans know and love.

Several key developers from the original game are returning for this project, including director Kazutoyo Maehiro, art director Hiroshi Minagawa, and original writer Yasumi Matsuno. New artwork by Akihiko Yoshida shows the main characters Ramza and Delita, highlighting their complex relationship that drives much of the story.
The game will include both the enhanced version with all the modern updates and a classic version that recreates the original 1997 experience for purists. Voice acting comes from a mix of new and returning Final Fantasy actors, with Joe Pitts as Ramza, Gregg Lowe as Delita, and guest appearances from Cloud and Aerith’s voice actors from the Final Fantasy VII Remake series.

Pre-orders are already available with bonus equipment and items. The standard pre-order includes a Mythril Knife, Spiked Boots, and healing items. The Deluxe Edition adds more gear, including a Ring of Aptitude that helps characters learn abilities faster.

The core gameplay remains the same tactical turn-based combat that made the original famous. Players can still choose from over 20 different job classes and hundreds of abilities to create custom party combinations. The job system lets you mix and match skills from classes like Black Mage, Dragoon, Summoner, and Thief to build unique characters.
