Following the successful re-release of SVC Chaos, SNK surprised fighting game fans during Tokyo Game Show 2025 with another classic revival. Real Bout Fatal Fury 2, originally released in 1998, received the same premium treatment that made SVC Chaos such a hit among retro fighting game enthusiasts. With the announcement and immediate, we had the exclusive opportunity to interview key figures behind this latest restoration project.
We got to hear from Yasuyuki Oda, SNK’s Executive Producer who has been with the company since 1993 and has overseen major fighting game projects since 2014, and Laurent Vernezy, the Retro Department Manager whose passion for bringing NEOGEO classics to modern platforms has made this release possible.
Why Real Bout Fatal Fury 2 Deserved Another Shot
The decision to revisit Real Bout Fatal Fury 2 wasn’t just about nostalgia. “As you pointed out in your question, not everyone had the chance to play REAL BOUT FATAL FURY 2 upon its release in 1998,” the developers explained. The game’s limited availability back in the day meant many fighting game enthusiasts never experienced its unique mechanics and roster.

What makes this re-release special is how modern technology allows SNK to address those original limitations. “Now, thanks to the progress made in game development and technology since then, we wanted to bring it back to modern audiences via the implementation of plenty of quality-of-life features, such as online rollback netcode so anyone can enjoy RB2 wherever they live, and regardless of their Internet connections,” the team shared.
The decision to focus on Steam wasn’t arbitrary. “Steam has become over the years a major gaming platform all over the world, and is very easy to use when updating games,” the developers noted. Beyond the technical advantages, there’s also a strong relationship factor at play. “Valve itself has also been very supportive of SNK for more than a decade.”

This partnership approach extends beyond just this single release. “We are looking forward to releasing more SNK and NEOGEO games in the coming years!” they revealed, hinting at more classic revivals on the horizon.
Modern Technology Meets Classic Design
The contrast between developing in 1998 versus 2025 is striking. “The progress made in gaming technology since the original release in 1998 has offered us the opportunity to add more content to our retro releases, such as all the extra features implemented in this premium version of REAL BOUT 2,” the developers explained.

However, bringing old games to modern systems isn’t without challenges. “Of course, not everything is easy (such as adapting to all types of PC and screen configurations), but SNK has been working closely with Code Mystics for more than a decade, and we are now very confident we can bring the best of our retro game catalog to our fanbase on Steam!”
Understanding the Two-Line System
Real Bout Fatal Fury 2’s signature feature is its two-line battle system, where players can move between foreground and background planes. For newcomers used to traditional 2D fighters, this can seem confusing. The developers addressed how they’re helping new players grasp this mechanic.
“The newly implemented Training Mode does explain how to use the two-line battle system in its Help section (as well as the How to Play screen before the character select screen),” they shared. The good news is that the system is more approachable than it might seem. “However, this mechanic has been greatly simplified in RB2, as players do only have to rely on the D button to switch to the other plane or move opponents back and forth between the two.”

Their advice for mastering it? “We hope players will enjoy and master this mechanic. Try it out to your heart’s content in Training Mode!”
Alfred Finally Gets His Due
One of the most interesting additions to this re-release is making Alfred fully playable. His inclusion has an interesting backstory that longtime fans will appreciate. “Alfred did appear for the first time in REAL BOUT FATAL FURY 2, but was not meant to be playable. He actually became a hero character in the spinoff title REAL BOUT FATAL FURY SPECIAL: DOMINATED MIND.”

For this ultimate version, SNK wanted to give players something extra. “However, as REAL BOUT FATAL FURY 2 comes back this time in an ultimate version, we really wanted to give players the opportunity to make Alfred fully playable along with the 22 default characters.”
What’s Next for SNK’s Retro Releases
When asked about future retro revivals, the developers remained tight-lipped but optimistic. “We cannot say that much for now, but please stay tuned for more reveals on the retro side in the coming months!”

For now, they’re focused on making sure players get the most out of this release. “Please enjoy for now this powered-up version of REAL BOUT FATAL FURY 2 with tons of features for the best game experience ever!”
The re-release of Real Bout Fatal Fury 2 represents more than just another classic game getting modern features. It shows how dedicated teams can bridge the gap between gaming’s past and present, ensuring that great games don’t get lost to time. With rollback netcode, training modes, and quality-of-life improvements, this version aims to give both newcomers and veterans the definitive way to experience this unique entry in the Fatal Fury series.
