Square Enix and Artdink Corporation have shared new details about Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake, focusing on how each game’s adventure begins. The remake launches worldwide on October 30, 2025, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, Switch 2, Switch, and PC via Steam and Microsoft Store.
The game combines remakes of Dragon Quest I and Dragon Quest II, which take place after the events of Dragon Quest III. Both games have been expanded with new scenarios, areas, dungeons, encounters, and enemies. The remake also introduces new gameplay features including sigils and scrolls that let players learn additional skills and spells, along with updated battle systems.

Dragon Quest I: The Journey Begins
Players start their adventure after hearing a mysterious voice in a dream, which leads them to Tantegel Castle. The king tasks them with learning about the legendary hero Erdrick and investigating the voice, directing them toward Erdrick’s Hollow and the Shrine of Rain.
Before leaving, players receive items and gold from the king to purchase equipment and supplies. The game includes a shortcut button system that lets players register frequently used commands for quick access to recovery items found at sparkling spots throughout the world.

Combat allows players to check monster stats when selecting commands. Dungeons contain treasures like scrolls and mini medals, which can be traded to a collector for special items. Along the journey, players meet various characters, including a bard named Zalen who researches Erdrick, and a sage at the Shrine of Rain who may know about Erdrick and the mysterious voice.
Dragon Quest II: A Multi-Character Adventure
The second game begins at Midenhall Castle, where the protagonist receives encouragement and the Princess’s Pledge necklace from their father. This special necklace is said to have unique powers.
Players can adjust settings to show hidden zones and treasure chest locations on the map. Towns feature shops where purchases can earn tombola tickets, which can be used at tombola stalls found around the world.

The adventure leads to Cannock Castle, where the Prince of Cannock has gone missing. His sister, the Princess of Cannock, joins the party to help search for him. While players cannot give her direct commands initially, she assists in battles with attacks and healing spells.
New Ocean Floor Exploration
Dragon Quest II introduces underwater exploration. As players progress, faeries request help collecting “living memories” scattered across the ocean floor. These memories contain records of Alefgard’s history and information about the protagonists’ ancestor.

The Record-Keeper explains that Hargon’s minions spread these memories throughout the seabed. Players can talk to merfolk and other sea-dwellers for guidance while exploring underwater areas, though dangerous monsters also inhabit these depths.
Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake aims to complete the Erdrick Trilogy story in the HD-2D visual style, bringing both classic games together with modern enhancements and additional content.
