South Korean developer Pearl Abyss has posted its highest quarterly revenue ever, and Crimson Desert is the reason why. According to the company’s Q1 financial results, the open-world action-adventure game has generated 266.5 billion won (roughly $178.92 million USD) in revenue since its mid-March launch. That figure pushed Pearl Abyss to some striking year-on-year growth numbers: annual revenue climbed 419.8%, while operating profit jumped 2,584.8%.
When it comes to where that money is coming from, overseas sales make up 94% of Crimson Desert’s total revenue. North America and Europe together account for 81% of that, making them the biggest drivers of the game’s commercial performance globally.

On the platform side, Pearl Abyss confirmed that revenue for Crimson Desert is split roughly 50-50 between PC and consoles. The game is available on PC through Steam, Epic Games Store, and the Mac App Store, alongside its console versions (PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S). As of mid-April, Crimson Desert had sold 5 million units worldwide.
Crimson Desert’s development started in early 2018. The game was first surfaced through Pearl Abyss’s earnings reports in early 2019 under the codename Project CD, and was officially announced under its current title at G-Star 2019. Originally conceived as a prequel to Black Desert Online, the project was gradually reimagined into a standalone single-player title set in a separate universe. The game runs on the BlackSpace Engine, an upgraded version of the proprietary engine used in Black Desert Online.
