A new entry in the Borderlands series has been quietly released, as Take-Two Interactive and Gearbox Software have shadow-dropped a mobile spin-off titled Borderlands Mobile exclusively on iOS. The release appeared on the Apple App Store without any prior announcement or marketing campaign, catching fans off guard.
Developed by Zynga, the mobile title marks the first official Borderlands game built specifically for smartphones. Zynga was acquired by Take-Two Interactive in 2022 for approximately $12.7 billion (about RM59.8 billion), making this release one of the most notable outputs from that acquisition so far.
A Free-to-Play Borderlands Experience Built for Mobile

Borderlands Mobile attempts to bring the franchise’s signature looter-shooter gameplay to a more compact format designed for short play sessions. Missions are shorter, combat encounters are smaller in scale, and progression is structured around mobile-friendly systems while still retaining the series’ familiar art style and chaotic gunplay.
The game is currently free-to-play on iOS, a notable contrast to the pricing controversy surrounding recent mainline entries in the franchise. An Android version has not been confirmed at this time.
Despite its smaller scope, the game launches with multiple modes and classic Borderlands elements such as skags, bandits, and boss encounters. It also features returning content inspired by fan-favorite activities, including the Circles of Slaughter from Borderlands 3.
Vault Hunters, Content Plans, and Monetization

At launch, players only have access to a single playable class known as the Summoner. However, additional Vault Hunters—including the Exo-Tank, Outrider, and Assassin—are planned as future updates.
The game also includes a battle pass system, though pricing details and full content structure have not yet been disclosed. This monetization approach aligns with typical free-to-play mobile models, though its long-term reception remains to be seen.
Mixed Reactions as Franchise Strategy Expands

While Borderlands Mobile has not yet accumulated enough reviews for a stable rating, early impressions suggest a surprisingly content-rich package for a mobile spin-off. Some observers have even noted that it appears more feature-complete at launch than recent mainline entries in the series, which have faced criticism over post-launch content pacing.
This release comes during a transitional period for the franchise following Borderlands 4, which launched less than a year ago and has since received ongoing updates, expansions, and performance improvements.
A New Direction for the Borderlands Franchise

The arrival of Borderlands Mobile signals a broader push by Take-Two Interactive to expand major console franchises into the mobile space, following the industry trend seen with series such as Call of Duty and Pokémon. Whether the spin-off becomes a long-term success will depend on future content updates and player reception.
For now, Borderlands Mobile is available exclusively on iOS, offering fans a portable way to experience the franchise’s trademark chaos while waiting for further developments in the main series.
