The Fall 2021 Anime Season is upon us and there’s a wide range of news shows for anime fans to get invested in but with so much selection, it may be hard to boil down to the shows that are right for you.

So here are seven shows that are worth a watch this anime season.

Komi San Can’t Communicate

Studio: OLM
Genre: Comedy, Slice of Life

The manga that took the internet by storm, Komi-san is the story of a cripplingly shy high school girl that wants to make 100 friends. The source material is known for being a wholesome slice of life manga about the daily lives of an introvert trying to put herself out there and overcome her communication issues with the help of her confidant friend Tadano.

This is one for those that want a sugary sweet light-hearted comedy. The kind of show to come home to after a long day. It’s also likely to be one of the most popular shows of the season, so if you want to make some friends of your own to discuss anime with, this would be a good start.

Komi San Can’t Communicate will be streaming on Netflix starting October 21st, 2021.

Blue Period

Studio: Seven Arcs
Genre: Drama, Slice of Life

Second-year high schooler Yatora Yaguchi is bored with his regular high school life, that is until he discovers the joy of art after seeing a painting by a member of the art club. For anyone who’s been taken away by the joys of an afternoon making a sketch or painting, you may see something in this anime.

The acclaimed manga not only showed Yatora convey his thoughts and feelings into his art but also the more grounded hard work that went into it. The manga depicts how hard it can be to start learning something new, especially when you’re older and have peers the same age who are already so far ahead of you.

The mangaka wanted to present the values of hard work and that is exactly what was shown in the manga and likely will be shown in this anime. Blue Period is a colorful mix of drama and a relatable slice of life for those looking to get in touch with their creative side.

Blue Period will be streaming on Netflix starting October 9th, 2021.

Mieruko-Chan

Studio: Passione
Genre: Comedy, Horror, Supernatural

Mieruko-chan is about Miko Chan, and she sees monsters. Hideous, grotesque monsters. While she finds these creatures terrifying, she’s the only one who can see them and decides to continue with her regular life trying to put up with them the best she can.

This one seems to be a good mix of comedy and horror with the daily lives of a high school girl combined with the horror of the psychological toll it takes on her to constantly seeing a bunch of eldritch abominations that visually do look pretty disturbing.

For those that want there comedy with a slightly darker shade of black, give it a watch.

Takt Op. Destiny

Studio: Madhouse, Mappa
Genre:  Action, Fantasy

We’ve looked at a few slice-of-life shows so how about a new action anime made by two of the most acclaimed studios in the industry.

Takt Op. Destiny takes place in a world that has been taken over by beings called the D2 who have banned all music, their one weakness. Now in America 2047, a conductor named Takt meets with Unmei a musicart, a person with the power to wield music. The two teams up to overthrow the D2 and restore music to the world.

The trailer already shows the promise of smooth animation courtesy of Mappa and Madhouse. As you may have guessed, this anime is heavily themed around music and that, of course, extends to a superb soundtrack, including an opening theme by Ryo. If you like action and music in an interesting fantasy setting, this could be your anime of the season.

Demon Slayer – Infinity Train Arc (TV Version)

Demon Slayer returns, albeit in returning to a previous arc. The box office-breaking Demon Slayer Infinity Train has been converted into a seven-episode anime.

Don’t think it’ll all be the same as the film but in smaller parts though. The TV version has over 70 new animation cuts including a brand new first episode centered around The Flame Hashira himself Rengoku, showing his journey to embark on the Infinity Train.

If you’re a fan of Demon Slayer, it still contains the breathtaking animation of Ufotable combined with the enduring story of the Kamado siblings. A great expansion on what was already great.

It’s also servers as a perfect recap before the proper Demon Slayer Second Season coming out in early December, right at the end of the fall 2021 anime after this finishes. It’s a good time to be a Demon Slayer fan.

Digimon: Ghost Game

Studio: Toei
Genre: Action, Adventure, Fantasy

Digimon is back for an all-new season. A series of ‘ghosts’ have been appearing all over the city causing damage and harming innocent people. These ghosts are of course really Digimon and it’s up to our main characters and their partner Digimon to stop them.

Ghost Game takes place in a separate continuity from any other Digimon series so you don’t need to watch any of the prior anime to get into it. In addition to a fresh start, the new season brings a slightly different take on Digimon as ghosts in urban Japanese horror, stalking kids, and haunting deserted locations at night, giving the show a more creepy vibe that will still be accessible for kids.

It looks to be a slightly more spooky adventure than Digimon usually goes but considering that show’s previous use of dark themes, perhaps it’ll all the more fitting.

The Heike Story

Studio: Science Saru
Genre: Historical

Science Saru of Devilman and Ping Pong The Animation fame is known for their more esoteric anime that have often become cult classics. Combined that with director Naoko Yamada of A Silent Voice and K-On fame, Heike Story looks like it’ll be shaping up to be another hit for their track record.

Based on a 1330 epic account of a struggle between the Taira and Minamoto clans during the Japanese Genpei War, this historical drama is told from the perspective of the blind traveling musician Biwa, who also has the ability to see the future. She soon meets Shigemori of the Taira clan and tells him a prophecy that could change Japan’s future as we know it.

The high quality of animation and samurai drama is shaping this one up to a standout of the season for those looking for a more serious anime to end the year with.

The first three episodes have already been aired due to the anime coming slightly early at the end of September. Regardless why not end the year and go through the fall 2021 anime season with a samurai story of family and fate.
