Sora from Kingdom Hearts has been announced as the final fighter for Super Smash Bros Ultimate, capping off two seasons worth of DLC characters.
In a bittersweet final presentation, Sakurai announced what would be the last character for the game, along with a breakdown of his moveset ahead of the character’s release on 18th of October.
Sora as a Smash Ultimate Character
Sora’s main gimmick is incredibly high aerial mobility, with a floaty jump befitting his playstyle in Kingdom Hearts. Just like in that game, he also has access to magic, which cycles as he uses the same input.
To allow opponents to predict what’s coming next, he also features the next spell in the slot over his player icon, which should prevent a lot of the frustrations people faced with Hero from Dragon Quest.
A lot of his moves also have bigger hitboxes, and are great for aerial recovery, making him a much harder character to definitively knock out without really putting effort into it.
Like many other swordsman-type characters Sora has a Counter move in Smash Ultimate , though it’s mainly for dealing with close range attacks in 1v1s since it doesn’t reflect projectiles back at the caster.
Celebrating The Entirety of Kingdom Hearts
Considering Sora’s many looks throughout the Kingdom Hearts series, Sakurai added multiple outfit variations for Sora: his alts include his outfits from Kingdom Hearts 2, 3 as well as Dream Drop Distance, and his rubber hose styled Timeless River outfit.
Interestingly enough, despite his association with Disney, Sora’s appearance in Super Smash Bros is notably absent of Disney Characters, with his companions Donald Duck and Goofy notably absent from his final smash.
How Sora Got Here
Sora has been one of the most requested Smash Bros characters, often with his own legion of fanboys requesting him during every single Smash reveal. Sakurai even mentioned that the character had actually won the Smash Bros ballot during Smash Bros for the Wii U, but they had decided to keep the results secret until they could get him in the game.
