Sony gave fans of Ghost of Tsushima a treat with a preview of the Director’s Commentary for the game.

In the video, Nate Fox, creative director at Sucker Punch Productions sat down with Shuhei Yoshida from Sony Interactive Entertainment and Dr. Kazuta Hongo from the Historiographical Institute at the University of Tokyo. The three discussed both the historical accuracy of the game, as well as the creative liberties made for the purposes of telling an engaging story.

The video also looks into the real-world challenges the Japanese Samurai faced during the Mongolian invasion of Tsushima.

The Mongolian Invasion As History Remembers It

“It was the first time that Samurai and Mongol soldiers fought, so the actual history is that the Japanese forces were almost completely wiped out”, says Dr. Hongo. “However, the reason they were wiped out is that there were many Mongolians and only a few dozen Japanese soldiers. That is the biggest reason”.

Dr. Hongo also explains that historically, the Mongol soldiers’ group-based tactics were overwhelming for the Samurai. The samurai, he say, fought in one-to-one fights.

“So for this reason the first battle resulted in the Japanese samurai being almost completely defeated,” he adds.
