Today’s Playstation State of Play stream kicked off in style with a closer look at the upcoming Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time.
The game is a direct sequel to Crash Bandicoot Warped, with Neo Cortex and N.Tropy breaking out of their interdimensional prison. Now, Crash and Coco need to save all the dimensions from the two evil scientists.
The team at Toys For Bob are working hard on a game that captures the spirit of the original games, while also enhancing it with modern advancements in platforming. This includes things like wall-running and rope swinging, which are new to the franchise. They also showed rail grinding, which looks great with Crash Bandicoot’s iconic perspective shifts.
They showed off N.Sanity Beach, which incorporates new gameplay while maintaining a faithful interpretation of the original’s design.
The team also announced that skins would be added to Crash 4. These skins would be purely cosmetic, and would not be locked behind microtransactions.
A Great Cast of Crash Bandicoot Favorites
They also revealed that Coco Bandicoot, Crash’s younger sister, would be playable on all the same stages as Crash. In theory, players could opt to play the entire game without ever actually controlling the titular Crash Bandicoot.
Crash and Coco aren’t the only characters, however. Neo Cortex and Dingodile are also playable too, all with unique playstyles. While it hasn’t been revealed how you’ll be playing as either of the two characters, Neo Cortex’s ability to alter his surroundings was shown off today.
As for Dingodile, we were treated to the exact reason why he’s playable as his retirement project -a diner- was destroyed right before he gets sucked into a hole through space and time.
Characters aren’t the only thing changing the gameplay, however. Crash can also find and use Quantum Masks, which also have gameplay altering abilities. These range from slowing down time to flipping gravity, and are essential for Crash’s quest to stop the mad scientists.
They also added a mirror mode called N.Verted Mode. This mode is more than just a cool style filter, however. It adds new perspectives and gameplay mechanics to levels you’ve already completed. The visual changes here actually affect gameplay, and present a great challenge for the fans who can’t get enough of Sony’s favorite Bandicoot.
