Possible PlayStation 5 controller patented by Sony

Sony has just filed a new patent which suggests that we may be looking at potential PlayStation 5 controller. With such little information on Sony’s next generation console made available, this particular piece of news is just but one tiny part of the puzzle that has yet to be solved.

LetsGoDigital has discovered a patent for what appears to be a multifunctional controller that looks unlike anything we have seen before. As we have seen what the upcoming DualShock 5 will look like, with it being similar to its predecessors, what we have at hand is something completely new.

Based on the filing itself, we are looking at a device that is capable of connecting multiple other devices using WiFi and Bluetooth. Among other things you could potentially do, the controller could let you play PC games on your TV or transfer media from device to another, something which the Wii U GamePad had attempted previously. More importantly, it can provide users with context-sensitive information, such as displaying the in-game map on it. The controller also apparently includes things like a fingerprint sensor and heart-rate monitor, making it a rather versatile device.

Now to address the elephant in the room. What’s with the boxy, rectangular design? LetsGoDigital theorises that the patent is just for the technology and does not in any way represent the final look and design. More likely than not, it could be implemented into the DualShock 5 itself or an upgrade of it. There is also the chance that this has nothing to do with the console itself, and it could be technology used for other Sony hardware. With the PlayStation 5 currently scheduled to be released at the end of 2020, expect to hear more about it sooner than later, and perhaps a clarification of what this mysterious controller actually is.
