After the recent mass shooting in New Zealand, the Negeri Sembilan Mufti was one of the first to voice out. Datuk Mohd Yusof Ahmad thinks that the popular battle royale game, PUBG, also known as PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds should be banned.

He thinks that the game is having a negative impact on young people as it might propel them towards terrorism. He even urged the government to ban the game as soon as possible. According to him, the fact that gaming is now considered as a professional sport means that the government should pay even more attention.

Furthermore, he also commented that the game has been purposefully planned for a long time with a goal in mind. He said the goal is to shape the minds of the younger generation to enjoy war, to fight and indulge in violent activities.

Additionally, he said Muslims should stay away from the game as it would only exacerbate Islamophobia, most probably because of the “terrorist tag” stereotype aimed towards the Muslims. PUBG may just be a game but once something happens again, the Muslims would most probably be the scapegoats again. He believes that the Christchurch accident happened because of the hatred towards Islam.

As for Islamophobia, Datuk Mohd Yusof Ahmad thinks it is created by the world’s leaders. He said it is no surprise that people would eventually follow suit when people at the top are spreading the hate towards Islam.

The Christchurch accident has been described by Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern as one of New Zealand’s “darkest days”. The total death count has risen to 50 so far and 20 were severely injured. Fortunately, all Malaysian victims survived the onslaught and we pray for their speedy recoveries. We hope to never see any mass shooting occur again in the future and may the terrorist be brought to justice.
