Trainer Battles is finally arriving in Pokemon GO. In light of the coming arrival of the highly anticipated mode, Niantic released details on Trainer Battles.
According to Niantic, the players can challenge one another at any time. Players will need to be near each other to initiate challenges. However, this does not apply to Great and Ultra Friends as they can do it from anywhere. By scanning a Battle Code, players assemble a team of 3 Pokemon to do battle with one another. Winners will receive rewards including rare evolution items.
As we mentioned last week, the PvP system will be divided into 3 leagues to level the playing field. Not only does it accommodate to weaker players, the division opens up possibilities of different strategies. Limiting the CP for each league prevents players from using possibly overpowered Pokemon in a certain league. On the other hand, it promotes picking less used Pokemon.
Furthermore, Pokemon GO Trainer Battles features real-time combat similar to Raid Battles. However, unlike standard features in Pokemon GO, Trainer Battles will feature a 2nd charge move for Pokemon instead of 1. Another new feature is the Protect Shield which blocks damage from opposing Pokemon. These new mechanics make Trainer Battles less predictable and opens up for new tactics.
Finally, players can opt to battle their Team Leader for practice. In exchange, players will receive rewards such as Stardust to power up their Pokemon. The Ace Trainer medal makes a comeback as players can now play against Team Leaders to obtain it. Unfortunately, players can only challenge Gym leaders once a day.
