Last year we are lucky to have an exclusive hands-on on Magnus Games’ Re:Legend, and one year later at LEVEL UP KL 2018 we finally got the chance to enjoy the game again! This time around, we enjoyed the one hour demo with a lot more content compared to last time, while DC Gan (Re:Legend developer) has told us plenty of details about the game too. About The Story
The protagonist (you) is a fallen hero who lost all of his/her memories, you are able to customize your character’s appearance and gender. At the beginning of the story, your character is washed ashore to an island and thus rescued by a blue Penguin named Papa Pia. With the help from the town mayor, you are given a farm to work on and retrieve your memories shattered around the world.
You will also rescue a pretty girl named Emilia at the earlier part of the story (I kinda regretted creating a female character though). A mysterious creature will appear when your character is sleeping too. We have no idea who and what is it yet, guess we will find out his identity as we progress further in the story.
The story is easy to understand, there will be a main storyline but you are free to explore around before progressing the main storyline. Exploring different areas helps in your character development as well! The main missions sometimes ask you to look for a specific Magnus. As Magnus appears randomly, how fast you can complete the mission is all depends on your luck.
About Farming
You will have a huge space to plant your crops in the farm. After planting the seeds, you can also water and fertilize the crops to maintain its growth rate. Interestingly, fertilizing the crops sometimes combines them into a big plant. The crops you harvest can be used to tame and evolve Magnus.
There is also a warehouse that stores the extra Magnus you caught. The official tells us that you can even let the Magnus help you out in managing the farm (such as watering and harvesting) if you develop a good relationship with them!
You will forge a weapon by playing a mini-game that requires you to stop the moving pointer at a right timing. The primary resources for forging a weapon can be obtained easily in your farm, so you can have at least 4 different types of weapons at the early stage of the game.
About Combat
We tried out the 4 primary weapons including double blades, sword, staff and bow in the demo this time. The good news is, DC tells us that there will be more types of weapons in the future. Left-clicking and right-clicking the mouse allows you to cast normal attacks and charged attacks. The gorgeous combo of double blades somehow resembles the Monster Hunter weapon, while using the bow allows you to release an AOE skill that is very useful if you are facing multiple enemies.
Other than weapons, you can also use the runes to increase your combat power. Different runes offer different kinds of power such as increased movement speed and continuously healing effect. However the runes come with a cooldown timer so you need it to use it wisely.
Of course, the Magnus will assist you in combat as well. The 2 Magnus you bring along will attack the enemies when you are being attacked, you can control the Magnus by riding on them too.
About Magnus
We have a bigger explorable area this time and are able to meet more Magnus. Every Magnus has their unique preference, you will need to feed them with food that matches their preference to tame or evolve them. As mentioned earlier, Magnus appears randomly so it requires luck if you want to capture a rare Magnus.
In the actual game, every Magnus requires a different method to raise (unlike in the demo version where you can evolve them just by feeding them something). Every Magnus is unique and adorable in their own way, there will be more Magnus being introduced to the game later and we are excited about it!
Conclusion
Playing the game again after one year has passed, we could see the effort that Magnus Games team had pour into the game. The UI, world, and contents are richer than ever this time. However, we do feel that it is still easier to control using a controller instead of using a keyboard. Gladfully DC promises that the team will optimize the control experience when the game is out. Also, the game is having a pretty good background music that changes whenever you are in a combat.
The version we tested isn’t the final version yet, but we are already having a lot of fun. An hour is not enough for us to complete the main missions, tame all the Magnus, or even explore the whole map. Moreover, it is only a small part of the full game map according to DC! He also tells us that they are announcing a good news very soon, so you can put your hopes up now!
