Sony CEO Hiroki Totoki spoke to The Wall Street Journal, stating that they’re shifting their focus to creating more movies, video games, and music. However, due to the continuous shortage of hardware and memory in today’s industry, Totoki stated that the company still doesn’t have a fixed date for the PS6.
The CEO added, ‘Considering that importance, we need to take some action. Otherwise, we cannot survive in this landscape.’ This comment comes after three months since Totoki addressed the status of the PS6, where he said that a release date hasn’t been decided yet. ‘We would like to really observe and follow the situation,’ the CEO stated in May when speaking about the global components shortage.

Analysts were predicting that the PlayStation 6 would release in 2027, which is on par with Sony’s usual cycle between each console generation. However, due to the current state of the industry, Sony may skip next year’s window altogether.
Earlier this year, Sony increased the price of the base digital PS5 from $499.99 in late 2025 to $599.99. Meanwhile, the PS5 Pro now sits at a staggering $899.99, so if a PS6 releases today, it could easily sit in the Steam Machine price range, which doesn’t benefit the players. Totoki also stated in May this year that Sony is thinking about various simulations, including changing business models, to come up with the best solutions regarding the current shortages.
Sony also revealed in October last year that it’s working with AMD to create ‘Project Amethyst,’ a joint research and development project focused on AI, machine learning and graphics technology for future gaming hardware. For now, PlayStation fans will have to remain patient. With Sony yet to reveal an official release date or price, the PS6’s launch plans remain firmly up in the air.
