Developer HoYoverse has announced that Version 4.2 of Honkai: Star Rail, titled “So Laughed the Masses,” will launch on April 22. The update delivers a major expansion to the ongoing Phantasmoon Games storyline, introduces two new 5-star characters, and kicks off a wide range of in-game events to celebrate the title’s third anniversary on April 26.
Version 4.2 positions itself as one of the game’s most substantial updates yet, blending high-stakes narrative progression with new gameplay systems and generous player rewards.
Phantasmoon Games Escalate Into a High-Stakes Conflict
The latest story chapter raises the stakes significantly, as the Phantasmoon Games evolve into a universe-wide spectacle. The reward for victory has been elevated to unprecedented levels, with the winner set to become the permanent Aeon of Elation. This shift immediately draws the attention of major factions, placing the Trailblazer at the center of a growing conflict.
The narrative unfolds further in Seafeld City, where Fulwish, a powerful media figure and leader of the Research Society of Happy Smiles, invites all participants to a televised debate. While framed as a discussion about the future of the Phantasmoon Games, the event quickly reveals deeper manipulation and hidden agendas. At the same time, Silver Wolf and Pearl’s secretive deal hints at a potential turning point in the larger conflict.
Silver Wolf LV.999 and Evanescia Join the Roster
Honkai: Star Rail Version 4.2 introduces two new 5-star characters aligned with the Path of Elation, each bringing distinct mechanics to combat.
Silver Wolf LV.999 represents an evolved version of the familiar Stellaron Hunter, reimagined as a “Godmode Player.” As an Imaginary-type character, she can manipulate the battlefield by generating special items, buffing allies, and disrupting enemies. Her abilities extend beyond active deployment, allowing her to protect teammates from control effects even when she is off-field.
Evanescia joins as a Physical-type character focused on sustained damage output. Her kit revolves around stacking a resource called “Certified Banger,” which enhances her damage while regenerating energy. As her stacks build, she can trigger additional attacks and provide team-wide offensive boosts, making her a strong presence in prolonged encounters.
New Path of Elation Trailblazer Gameplay
The Trailblazer also gains access to the Path of Elation in Version 4.2, introducing a new combat style centered around a transforming glow stick weapon. This weapon can shift between multiple forms, enabling wide-area attacks, rapid combos, and team support capabilities.
In addition to dealing damage, the Elation Trailblazer can empower allies by granting resource stacks and triggering immediate follow-up actions. This creates a more dynamic and fast-paced combat flow that aligns with the update’s overall theme.
Third Anniversary Events and Rewards
To celebrate its third anniversary, Honkai: Star Rail will feature a variety of returning events and new rewards. The “Festive Gifts” login campaign will grant players a total of 20 pulls, while a special anniversary reward on April 26 will provide 1,600 Stellar Jades through a companion blessing system.
The Stellar Convergence Store will also be updated with limited 5-star characters Huohuo and Robin. Players can exchange a freely obtainable Golden Companion Spirit for a character of their choice, continuing a popular annual tradition. Additional bonuses include the reset of first-time top-up rewards, new store content, and a new outfit for Castorice.
Warp Banners, Buffs, and Event Expansions
Version 4.2 will feature multiple Warp banners across its update cycle, with reruns for characters such as The Dahlia, Castorice, Firefly, Tribbie, Sunday, and Feixiao. At the same time, several existing characters, including Firefly, Huohuo, Seele, and Welt, will receive balance adjustments to improve their performance.
The update also expands its event lineup with new modes such as “Cosmic Data Roaming,” which introduces a streamer-style progression system based on combat performance. Additional updates include expansions to Currency Wars and Cosmicon Collective, alongside new activities like Express Renovation Escapade and Relic Recon.
New Animation Project Revealed
As part of the anniversary celebrations, HoYoverse also revealed a concept trailer for “Death in the Afternoon,” an original animation project produced in collaboration with MAPPA. While details remain limited, the project signals continued expansion of the Honkai: Star Rail universe beyond the game itself.

Honkai: Star Rail is available now on PlayStation 5, PC via the official client and Epic Games Store, as well as iOS via the App Store and Android via Google Play.
