The latest expansion for DYNASTY WARRIORS: ORIGINS takes players down a different path—one where history’s villains and antiheroes take center stage. Visions of Four Heroes explores what might have happened if you sided with Zhang Jiao, Dong Zhuo, Yuan Shao, or Lu Bu instead of following the traditional heroic route. Our review will break down what the DLC offers, from its reimagined storylines to new combat options and gameplay improvements that enhance both the expansion and the base game.
Four Complete “What If” Stories
The DLC’s main draw is its alternative narratives. Each of the four routes takes roughly 3-4 hours to complete, adding up to about 15 hours of total playtime. Unlike the main game where you can shift between factions, these paths are linear. Once you pick a side, you’ll see that story through from beginning to end without branching off.

Despite this focused structure, the storytelling doesn’t feel rushed or shallow. Each route includes fully realized cutscenes, proper dialogue, and clear narrative direction. Familiar faces from the base game, including characters from Shu, still show up and play meaningful roles throughout these alternative timelines. Visions of Four Heroes also throws in some unexpected twists that should catch players off guard in a good way.
These aren’t just bonus chapters tacked on for extra content. Each storyline explores what could have happened if these factions had actually succeeded in their ambitions. The characters’ struggles, motivations, and personalities come through clearly, making each route feel substantial and emotionally engaging rather than just an optional extra.

New Weapons Change Combat
Two new weapons join the arsenal: the Bow and the Rope Dart. The Bow works for both close-quarters and ranged fighting thanks to its blade attachment. Landing hits builds up Vigor, which powers stronger bow attacks. This creates a satisfying rhythm where you can slash away in melee range, then unleash devastating shots from a distance.
The weapon really shines in one-on-one duels. After dodging an attack, you can keep your distance while still putting pressure on opponents and chipping away at their health. The combat style balances mobility, strategy, and hitting power in a way that feels dynamic and rewarding once you get comfortable with it.

The Rope Dart brings a completely different approach. It’s fast, hits multiple enemies at once, and lets you chain combos smoothly. This makes it excellent for controlling crowds and keeping enemies at bay. Diao Chan primarily uses this weapon, and her agile, elegant fighting style matches it perfectly. The attacks are acrobatic and quick, requiring good timing and positioning, but once you nail it down, the Rope Dart becomes extremely satisfying to use.
Beyond the new weapons, existing ones get new Arts, and trait level caps have been raised. There’s also a new skill panel called Visionary Might for further character customization. Best of all, any weapons you unlock in the DLC can be used in the base game, making this expansion genuinely useful beyond just experiencing the new stories.

Quality of Life Improvements
The lodgings have been upgraded with an Inn, Shop, and Training Ground. In the base game, you’d need to travel around to find characters for side quests or training. Now they come directly to you at the lodgings, making everything more convenient and cutting down on unnecessary travel time.
The Training Ground deserves special mention. It’s a dedicated space where you can fight tough opponents to test your skills without the pressure of story missions. You can experiment with new weapons, try different Arts, and refine your strategies in a controlled setting. The challenges help you level up and strengthen your characters while providing genuinely tough fights that can be more demanding than regular story battles.

These changes transform the lodgings from a simple menu hub into an interactive space where you can train, shop, rest, and meet important characters all in one spot.
New Companions Join the Fight
Three new playable characters appear in the DLC. Zhuhe is a Guardian of Peace like the protagonist, adding both combat strength and story depth. Diao Chan, famous for her beauty and charm, brings agility to battles and adds an emotional dimension to the narrative. A third character debuts as well—someone who wasn’t in the main story. He first appears as an enemy during Zhang Jiao’s route and uses the bow as his weapon.
These companions make both combat and storytelling more varied. They offer new strategic options in battle and fresh viewpoints in the narrative, ensuring the DLC feels distinct from the main game while still connecting to the overall world.

Strategic Battles Add Tactical Depth
Instead of freely exploring maps like in the main game, Visions of Four Heroes focuses on main quests and introduces Strategic Battles. These occur during story breaks and feel somewhat like simplified Romance of the Three Kingdoms-style confrontations, adding tactical elements without getting overly complex.
During these battles, enemy and allied units fight automatically. You don’t control every move, but you choose which enemy units to engage and how to support your allies. Defeating enemies earns rewards—either Secret Tactics or Command and Control items. Secret Tactics work similarly to squad tactics from the main game but often provide bigger buffs or more powerful attacks.

After a set number of turns, a notification signals the Decisive Battle is starting. This is the final confrontation where everything—units, tactics, preparations—comes together for a climactic showdown. The system adds planning, strategy, and suspense without requiring full map exploration, giving players a different way to experience large-scale combat.
Verdict
Visions of Four Heroes feels like a meaningful addition rather than disposable extra content. By exploring alternative scenarios for four significant characters, it delivers complete stories that add depth the main game couldn’t provide. More importantly, it gives these characters proper endings and strong narrative focus—something earlier Dynasty Warriors games often failed to do when treating them as side characters.

The gameplay additions have real value too. New weapons, new characters, Strategic Battles, and lodging improvements all contribute meaningfully. Features like the Bow and Rope Dart carrying over to the base game make the purchase feel more rewarding overall.
For Dynasty Warriors fans who have wanted to see these characters handled with more care and narrative attention, Visions of Four Heroes delivers a solid and satisfying experience that’s worth the time investment.
