Nihon Falcom is already looking ahead to their next remake project, but the team can’t agree on which game to tackle. Following the release of Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter this September and with 2nd Chapter scheduled for 2026, the studio is considering what comes next. According to CEO Toshihiro Kondo in an interview with Dengeki Online, the development team is split between remaking Trails in the Sky the 3rd or Trails from Zero.
“We’re not sure whether to do the 3rd or from Zero next – opinions are divided among us,” Kondo explained. “Some of the members are saying that it would be better to do a remake of from Zero before the 3rd.”

Kondo noted that continuing with the 3rd would make more sense for story continuity. He pointed out that the game contains important story elements for characters like Renne and Kevin, and marks the first appearances of the Crossbell region and Erebonia’s Blood and Iron Chancellor Osborne. “I think we have to do a remake of the 3rd at some point, but there are many possible ideas for what form it could take,” he said.
As for Trails of Cold Steel, fans shouldn’t expect a remake anytime soon. Kondo described remaking the Cold Steel games as “a rather difficult feat” due to their size and scope. “When we were developing Cold Steel, we were told to just do whatever we liked, so we packed the game with so many different elements,” he said. He added that combining Cold Steel I and II into one title would be challenging given how much content both games contain.

The success of 1st Chapter, both in Japan and internationally, has clearly encouraged the studio to continue with remakes. Nihon Falcom currently has several projects in development, including Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter, Trails Beyond the Horizon (set for global release in January 2026), and a new Tokyo Xanadu series installment. Given the studio’s fast development pace, an announcement about the next remake could come sooner rather than later.
